First you need to ensure that the letters are on lowercase and not capital – so toggle the button on the upper right with a box & upwards arrow, until the letters are showing lowercase. Then select the button that is 2 options below that – so far right, 3rd down from the top, buttons says "!?#$%&". Then you'll be able to select symbols like the #.
