This can happen on a Roku Streambar if the TV is off, or if the input isn't set to the Roku. Oh, and if the HDMI port or cable is bad. But only on a Streambar.
If you are hearing out of your TV speakers, then it could be an issue with the HDMI input going bad. Can you connect to a different HDMI input?
And what is your Roku model number?
