Roku Ultra suddenly needing more memory, added 64GB card, not enough

Jump to solution

Hello,

I have a Roku Ultra which I ran for years without a Micro SD card with no problems.  Then suddenly the other day I found I couldn't run a single app without getting a "not enough memory" error.  So I got a 64 GB micro SD card and  that solved the problem for most of my apps, but not all.  I still get "not enough memory" for Prime Video, for example.

What is this?  I ran for years with no micro SD card at all, and now suddenly a 64GB card isn't big enough.  I looked in Settings | System | About and saw that only 5% of the card was being used.  How can I be running low on memory all of a sudden?  I could try a larger card but what size should I use?  What size can the Roku Ultra accomodate?  There is NO information anywhere on the Roku website about what sizes of Memory cards to use. Should I try a 256 GB?

Try doing a system restart or unplugging power to the Roku for 60 seconds to clear the cache and see if that helps.

For specific apps, uninstall, system restart or unplug power, then reinstall and see if that helps.

SD cards do go bad over time, sometimes without warning as does the memory used on the devices, so that is a possibility as well.

It won't use more than 2-4GB of the card. There may be other issues going on. It's possible the internal memory may be going bad and/or is corrupted, causing it to get confused.

A last-ditch effort may be to try a factory reset, which should wipe out and force a reload of everything.

Unplugging the power for 60 sec did the trick, so it looks as though I wasted my money on the 64 GB card. Ah well, it wasn't much, and the problem got solved.  Thanks much for the advice!

Glad it worked.  It is always good to have a spare SD card as they can go bad over time without warning, especially if they are written to a lot.
