Hello, Ever since the last update my power light does not shut off. I have found a way to shut it down w/o unplugging the unit. What I do is before I shut the TV off I put the TV on a different source. At this point the Roku shuts off. Then I shut my TV down for the night and the Roku stays off. Problem solved!
Hey, @201058ced.
Welcome to the Roku Community!
Thanks for sharing your experience here with us. We know it is pretty inconvenient if your Roku does not shut off, and we appreciate you sharing the workaround you used to resolve this.
But could tell us more about it?
Please get back to us!
Best,
The Roku Community Team
I have had this less than one month and I have not figured out how to shut the power light off. This is not a problem with my Roku Ultra or my Streambar SE. My concern is that the Express 4K+ is continually streaming and this is why my internet data usage is through the roof. What can be done to fix it?
Hello, As I stated earlier in the forum I found that putting my TV on a different input or source shut the unit down until I wanted to use it. Then you can just shut the TV off. Problem solved !!
Are you pressing the Home button when you are finished streaming?
Pressing the Power button will only turn the TV off and has no effect on the Roku device. Need to use the Home button to return to Home Screen to stop streaming/using data.
You can also Enable Bandwidth Saver under Settings/Network/Bandwidth Saver [On].
This setting will stop streaming after 4hrs of inactivity.
There is also an Automatic Power Savings feature you can try using. (Settings/System/Power/Auto-Power Savings/20-min inactivity).

If the light remains on, usually an indicator that the device is actively streaming or is awake. Once you return to the Home Screen, the device should enter a Sleep Mode after a brief period of time/idleness and then light should go off. (normally after screen saver time kicks in).
The Express 4k+ behaves similarly to the Ultra in the above regards. (requiring use of Home button). I believe the Streambar is more like a RokuTV in that the Power button also stops the active streaming.
If you're worried that the Roku is using data when you're not watching it, just press the home button when you're done watching.
I did press on the "Home" and then the "Power" buttons to try to stop the streaming. Several hours later the white light on the Roku 4K+ is still on.
The Bandwidth Saver is and has been actuated since new.
t appears you are conceding that since the light on my device is remaining on, that the device is still actively streaming. I am trying to stop this behavior since my internet data download is thru the roof. I do not have unlimited streaming.
I suspect my Express 4K+ is defective or needs reprogramming at a minimum.
"It appears you are conceding that since the light on my device is remaining on, that the device is still actively streaming. "
No, actually what I replied is the white light usually an indicator that the device is actively streaming or is awake (ie. can be sitting on the Home Screen), and will usually go off when Screensaver engages/kicks in.

Try adjusting the Screensaver Start Time under Settings/Theme/Screensaver Start Time and see if that helps. Lower the start time to 1 Minute. Then return to Home Screen and put the remote down. If working correctly, the screensaver should kick in after a minute (and stay on your screen), but the light should go out.
Now, the above being said, that is how it "should" work. I have seen reports that some Ultra users indicate their lights never go out (and others say their lights never go on). I have various model numbers of the Ultra and also the 3941 Express 4k+ and am not seeing the light issue. (all work like they should).
Regardless though of the light indicator, when on the Home Screen, the Roku device is no longer actively streaming (using data). Some data may still be used when the device undergoes its nightly update check but minimal (since it is communicating with Roku servers). Only way to prevent "any data" from being used is to power down the device by actively unplugging it or placing it on a timer/switch at the outlet which will cut physical power to the unit.
If the adjustment to the Screensaver Start Time does not resolve issue then perhaps consider performing a Factory Reset on the device. (press and hold in Reset button for 30+ seconds).
Hello, As stated earlier all you have to do is select a different source on your TV like DVD, Sat etc. When you do that the light will go out and stay off at which point you can shut off the TV and everything will be off or view another input.
I've seen various behaviors of the the LED over the years, so I don't pay much attention to that anymore, and the equipment that you have connected* also appears to be a factor as to whether the Roku can tell when it is not being viewed, but if you're at the home screen (not in an app) then the device is not streaming.
(* ie brand and model TV, and straight to TV vs via AVR, HDMI splitter etc...)
