My closed captions work most of the time but the problem I have is the letters
in the words are missing. You have to guess at what the words are.
The captions are provided by the video streamer. The Roku is not doing anything but display what is provided. I've watched HBO Max on my Ultra 4800 over the past few weeks, always with captions on. I've never seen any characters missing.
What channel(s) are you seeing this on, and what model Roku are you using?

I'm not sure of the model. It had a box that plugs into the tv. When it
does it I switch to my Firestick with no problem
You can see the model number by going to the Settings/System/About menu. Just because the captions look correct on a different brand of box doesn't mean anything. Providers such as Netflix or Amazon stream to different platforms from different servers, so the content isn't always the same.
When recorded progams, closed caption is scrambling?? 🤔
@SANDRAJ58 what channel are you watching the recorded programs on? My guess it's something provided by a 3rd party, not Roku. If so, you would need to contact them about their channel functionality.
