Let's assume the Roku Streambar is my only source for my TV. I connect via a non-ARC HDMI port. For streaming content coming from the Roku, do I need a return path for the audio? If so, why? Couldn't the Roku just play the audio itself and send the video on to the TV via HDMI?
Part of this is just my curiosity, and part of it is practical. The practical part is that I have a TV with ARC supported on one HDMI port, but a higher refresh rate (no ARC) on another HDMI part.
NO, you do not need a hdmi-arc or optical if you only source is the streambar itself. It will work fine.

Not true. I have same situation. ROKU soundbar is only source and it will not play. Error message on screen says that I cannot set up due to HDMI issue. If you can tell me how to get by the error message it would be appreciated.
Thanks for the post.
Can you please provide more information about the issue you are experiencing? How is everything connected and what are you specifically seeing?
With more information we will be able to assist you further.
Thanks,
