Roku TV Black screen with audio but no video

Issue with Roku TV and Spectrum cable box – audio but no video

Background:
I recently purchased a brand new Roku TV (Model 40R3B5) from Best Buy about a week ago.
The TV is set up in my parents’ assisted living community, where cable is provided via Spectrum and an Arris cable box connected via HDMI.
They also use Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, which stream through a wireless router in their apartment.

Initial Setup & Functionality:

  • Streaming Services (Netflix & Amazon Prime) work fine using the Roku remote.
  • Cable TV was initially working correctly using the Spectrum remote:
  • The TV button on the Spectrum remote was mapped to the cable box, allowing easy switching between streaming and cable.
  • For the first week, everything functioned perfectly.

The Problem:

  • Suddenly, yesterday, when switching to TV (cable) using the Spectrum remote, the screen goes black – audio plays, but there’s no video.
  • Streaming services (Netflix, Amazon) still work correctly using the Roku remote.
  • Switching back to cable consistently results in a black screen with audio only.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:
Spectrum Support:

  • A technician was sent out and replaced both the cable box and HDMI cable.
  • Tried different HDMI ports on the TV – issue persists.

Temporary Workaround Found:

  • If we power off and then power back on the cable box (using the top-right button on the Spectrum remote), the picture returns.
  • However, this workaround is too complicated for my mother, who is not tech-savvy.

Concerns & Next Steps:

  • The Spectrum technician believes this is a Roku TV issue.
  • Oddly, the TV worked perfectly for a week before the issue appeared.
  • I’m not sure what’s causing this or how to fix it permanently.

Request for Help:

  • Has anyone experienced a similar issue with a Roku TV and Spectrum cable box?
  • Are there settings or updates I should check on the Roku TV?
  • Any permanent fix suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Many cable TV systems scramble their signals and require a set-top box to view the signals on a TV. Consult with your cable company to find out if they have “in the clear” signals on your cable that will work on a standard TV RF input.

Many cable TV systems scramble their signals and require a set-top box to view the signals on a TV. Consult with your cable company to find out if they have “in the clear” signals on your cable that will work on a standard TV RF input.
