@Sugarking wrote:@DBDukes there's no need to get hostile. Obviously though, the way you're defending roku and criticizing pornhub and vidangel users, makes you sound like you don't like the platforms. ...
I don't like the actions of the companies in how they responded to Roku's changes to beta channels. And, when I went to bed last night, PornHub was on my Roku, and when I got up this morning, it wasn't. Does that change things in how you're viewing me? If so, you made an assumption about me that you should not have made. You want to call that hostile? Fine. I don't like people making up stuff in their mind then criticizing me over things they made up.
@Sugarking wrote:... On another note, what does roku lose financially by letting people access an internet site's content for streaming? If anything it sells more Roku devices by giving viewers more options to view content, or makes it more convenient. ...
I think it is a financial thing. What I'm about to say is simply my opinion. I'm not presenting this as fact.
I think Roku had one additional reason for stepping up enforcement of the rules, and rewriting them to match original intent. Every app in the Channel Store must confirm to financial restrictions and requirements. If the service for which the app exists allows subscriptions, the app must allow subscriptions through Roku Pay. Roku gets a cut for anything that costs money, if bought through the app, and the app must allow for buying it.
VidAngel lost a big legal challenge to Disney and Warner Bros. It cost them over $62-million, and they went bankrupt. They eventually negotiated to a little under $10-million paid out over 14 years. Imagine if they had an official Roku app, and people purchased through Roku. Roku could be on the hook for part of that, since they would have allowed an app that facilitated money changing hands over content that violated the copyright owners' rights. I think (I'm not in the loop, and I have no information to back this up, just my opinion) that Roku will need some convincing to allow VidAngel to have an app in the Channel Store.
I also think it's possible. Roku used to close discussions here of any thread that mentioned PlayOn. At the time, PlayOn had a non-certified app that was used for, well, piracy. Roku would remove the app, PlayOn would build a new one, then Roku would find out and remove it. Finally, PlayOn legitimized, and now has not one but two apps in the Channel Store.
As for PornHub, they were as I described, using what was a testing platform as a final platform, and now the squatters (my term, maybe trespassers is better) are being thrown out. Oh, and the legal challenge against PornHub is still ongoing. My opinion is that Roku won't allow an app in the Channel Store until this is settled.
Now, before you say that Roku won't allow PornHub in anyway, here's another tidbit, and this isn't opinion. I've seen this. Roku's instructions for developers include making an indication if the app is adult content. I don't know if Roku is planning a section of adult content (again, I don't have inside information), but the developer process has a way to indicate it.
I don't know how this will all shake out, but I'm not about to make stuff up in my head and then criticize someone over it. No one should. Base it on facts, not assumptions.

@DBDukes the hostility comes from talking down to people, saying they don't know anything, and then getting all pissed when people make assumptions because of the evidence that was laid out, with you coming off as highly defensive of roku. Then there's this whole demeaning attitude saying "people making stuff up in their heads". Tell people how you want to be characterized as then, or where you stand on the issue, and less assumptions would be made.
@Sugarking wrote:@DBDukes the hostility comes ... saying they don't know anything ...
I didn't say you didn't know anything. I will correct statements that are incorrect, and if you are incorrect about a thing, I'll tell you that you are incorrect about a thing.
@Sugarking wrote:... getting all pissed when people make assumptions because of the evidence that was laid out ...
That's just it. There was no evidence. I never mentioned how I felt about it because ... get this ... it doesn't matter. Facts don't care about opinions. Maybe don't make assumptions? Try that.
@Sugarking wrote:... Then there's this whole demeaning attitude saying "people making stuff up in their heads"...
But that's what you did. You control that. Or it controls you. Your choice.
@Sugarking wrote:... Tell people how you want to be characterized as then, or where you stand on the issue, and less assumptions would be made.
No. Absolutely not. It's not my problem that you make assumptions you shouldn't make. Where I stand doesn't matter. Facts don't care about that. You seem to be missing that point. A lot of people seem to miss that point.
If you or anyone wants to go down the road of making assumptions, that's a character flaw of them, not of me. I'm not going to let someone else's problem be mine. I'm a adult. I'm responsible for my own actions, and not anyone else's. When I'm wrong, I learn what I can, see how I got there, and correct going forward. I'm not going to get all butthurt about things. But when you're wrong about me, I'll tell you. How you deal with it is totally on you.

@DBDukes @There you go again, attacking a person and saying they have character flaws
@itzme I agree, if people are grown adults, they can watch whatever they want, so long as it isn't something illegal.
Sometimes I wonder if the people defending roku's decision, have some kind of financial interest to do so.

There you go again making up stuff in your head. I have never received any monetary benefit from Roku -- ever. And every Roku I've ever used is one I purchased with my own money. I do not own any Roku stock, and have never invested in Roku in any way, shape, or form apart from owning Roku devices (in addition to Apple TV, Fire TV, and multiple Google/Android TV based devices) for my own personal use. Anything that benefits, or hurts, Roku has no financial impact on me in any way.
My interest is telling the truth in this forum is simply that: the truth. For me, life is not a delusion. You should consider that.

@DBDukes you need to back off with this hostility, I seriously don't know what your problem is. There's no need to be so argumentative, and insulting. You're not king/queen of the message boards.
When you make up stuff about me, I will call you on it.

Seriously? You cast asperations on the man and then act all put upon when he slaps back? What did you expect? Call the man's character into question and expect him to he accept it?
Others more knowledgeable have chimed in on this thread, and none have contradicted anything he's said. That indicates he knows what he's talking about. You might not like it, but you really should listen to the Roku Community Experts. They do not work for Roku, but they have a lot of experience as Roku users, and can be an excellent guide to using Roku and understanding how and why things work as they do.
You've reached some conclusions about him that are simply wrong. You've voiced them and he's corrected you. Your error was voicing these things without anything to support them. That can lead to trouble. Here on the Internet, you can act like that and face no physical repercussions. In real life, you can't. Acting like that on the Internet does not look well to those that see it. Others do see it. But, if being seen that way doesn't matter to you, then I've wasted a few minutes of my day. I've made worse decisions.
@Basil whoa there, now. I didn't come in here to be ganged up on. And don't need to be insulted. I never came to this board to cause trouble. And if DBDukes didn't want to get in this mess, maybe they should have started civil in the first place. Instead of insulting peoples intelligence. I came in here peacefully, they escalated the situation with rudeness, and quite frankly you're doing the same. Stow away the elitist attitude, no body needs this today.
