Blu-ray sound not coming through soundbar

Hoping for some optimistic feedback or direction. Our new soundbar plays fine with our smart Samsung using the ARC optical cable. Our blu-ray player does not. The blu-ray is connected with an HDMI to the TV, we can see the movie on the screen, however we don't have any sound. We've searched through the menus on the tv/roku/blu-ray and nothing has solved the issue. Do we need a cable to run from blu-ray to soundbar? Our tv is still in good shape even though it's from @2009. Blu-ray not the highest level. Putting this all out there in case it helps with any recommendations. Thanks for anything.

@DaleCooper

Thanks for the post.

Can you please clarify how you are connecting the Roku Soundbar to your TV? Are you using both the HDMI and optical cable or are you just using an optical cable.

Please keep us posted what you find out.

Re: Blu-ray sound not coming through soundbar

Thanks for the response. Yes, we have the HDMI connected from tv to soundbar, as well as the optical cable. We don't have any issues with the soundbar and the tv, it's with the soundbar and the blu ray player. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Re: Blu-ray sound not coming through soundbar

Optical cables can go bad, its made of glass, a kink in the cable can break the glass. Try another optical cable?

Re: Blu-ray sound not coming through soundbar

Thanks for the feedback. The cable is working fine, we get all audio from soundbar to TV, no problem. It's the audio from the blu ray that is working which connected to the tv, and then the tv is connected to the soundbar. We've tried all the settings on the tv and blu ray, still no sound. It doesn't say we need a cable from the blu ray to the soundbar so I feel like we are missing one simple step, or we do indeed need a cable. Thoughts?

Re: Blu-ray sound not coming through soundbar

The sound and video from Soundbar to the tv is going through the hdmi cable. That doesn't prove the optical cable is alright. The optical cable or hdmi-arc is what is used to send audio only from the tv to the soundbar. And so whatever is tuned to via the tv its audio would go through the optical cable to the soundbar.
