Channel Names

This should be an easy for veteran developers. 

Is there a way to reserve a channel name other than publishing it? How are the channel names granted?

No official way. You could publish a private channel with the name and delete it before publishing the public one,  but people have reported that not always working.
You pick your own channel name.
