You are correct, but apparently the HBO Max app can be sideloaded.

I know a guy with hundreds of tv channels on his fire stick.  It’s like $20 a month for the service and he can get like every channel in the world, including PPV.  None of those IPTV apps are on roku, even for iptv providers you pay for.  Then the HBO Max snafu... makes me wonder if I made the right investment. 

On the positive side, my Roku’s are as simple as it gets.  Arrow to what you want, hit ok and it loads.  Easy to reorder the screen.  It just works.  Sure it’s missing content but it loads my stuff pretty quickly. I’ve used a fire stick and I don’t know if it was an early generation or what, but it lagged so bad I had to reboot it numerous times.

That firestick is hacked and much of that content is illegal. I have a friend who went that way and the good stuff feeds were always overloaded, laggy, and useless. I bought the top end one to do the same.  But here I am back on the Roku, my fire cube wasting space...  On the plus side, the fire is a much more open architecture and it has a browser. Roku has flat out declared the the Roku will never have a browser.  So seriously considering going back as I am already a prime member

I went to roku because at the time, the Fire did not have Youtube.  That issue is solved and I am going back to the Fire, it worked great, it was infinitely changeable and open, and the **bleep** thing had a browser

If you want a browser then yes Roku was the wrong way to go. However if you want to view HBO MAX on your Roku it's pretty simple and I can walk you thru the steps either PM me or on another board as it is off topic for this one. Essentially mirror your phone to the Roku.

 Roku does not support the type of screen cast my phone uses. . as the Google Chromecast is  so cheap I decided to take a look at it and so far I'm pretty happy I haven't been able to locate my fire cube but I think the Chromecast is not my cup of tea. It does not mirror the phone, but you have to put apps you want to watch on your phone.  I rebooted my phone during an hbomax stream and the stream continued

I doubt fire stick is any better. I have both and at various times have encountered 4 k rendering issues on certain channels from both. Till recently, I considered the roku more reliable but over the weekend I realized that likely the last update  messed with my Prime channel's capability to render their programming in 4 k. Frustrating but will likely be resolved with an update.

In comparing the two it may be that the fire stick has a faster navigating setup

Yes, you can talk to an Amazon agent who will claim to resolve your issue soon but won't. It seems my Netflix 4k rendering issue was something not acknowledged by the company. Overtime it has gotten better and may be totally resolved after 18 months of annoyance

I dropped fire because of the youtube thing  After I reinvested in roku, Amazon resolved the youtube issue.  But I had already transitioned

I find the fire superior for a couple of reasons

First you can install a web browser, that is a big win because it lets you see web content on your TV natively.

Second, the fire is an open system and you can side load all kinds of stuff. Like a web browser!  Which Roku has already said won't ever happen.   But Amazon is also bickering with ATT, sooooo....
