Star Trek Replicator Food Soon May Be Coming to a Galaxy Near You

real-life-star-trek-replicator-prepares-meal-in-30-seconds

"Tea, Earl Grey, hot."

Many a time, Captain Jean-Luc Picard spoke these four words in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and, Presto!, a cup of his favorite hot tea would magically appear in the little food machine they called a food replicator.

But that's just science fiction.  Right?

Maybe not for long.  Remember back in 2013 when NASA offered a 125,000 USD prize to a company that could 3D print a pizza?  It didn't look very delicious, did it?  Well, apparently, the quality of 3D printed foods has improved greatly since then.  Soon, they say, 3D printed foods will have the look, feel and taste of the real thing.

"If Giuseppe Scionti has his way, the steaks on our plates will soon come from a 3D printer. The Italian inventor and engineer has printed the first 100% vegetarian steak at his Spanish startup. And it’s said to not only look and taste like the real thing — it also has the same consistency when chewed."

If you can't wait for 3D food printing technology to arrive in your corner of the galaxy, just pour yourself a nice, cold glass of near beer and cook yourself a nice, thick, plant-based burger and bust out your T9 Nokia flip phone and with a little imagination, maybe you're actually living in the 24th century on board a starship and eating replicator food?

Season 3 of The Orville is set to be released in October of this year on Hulu.
