SPAM private messages WTF

Jump to solution

I have never even posted here or been here on this community, I was forced to set up an account for my TV to function.  Now I am receiving spam messages via private message, and getting email updates about spam private messages I cannot report, or block.

WTF is this BS? What kind of incompetent designs a forum with automatic email updates about spam froma private message box that you cannot report or disable!?

Allow to turn off private messages or block all but from admins or turn off email updates. I do not need any more SPAM in my inbox that I cannot turn off!  This is asinine. Fix your garbage website.

Actually no, there is not any way to report the spam messages or the members at all.

And having to log in and ignore every single spammer is not a solution in the least. That is ridiculous.

A way to only accept PMs from admins is a solution, like every other forum I've ever been a member of.

Also being able to sing up and them start spamming other users immediately is also ridiculous..

A few thoughts:   I used Rokus for years before signing up for this forum, so being a forum member is not mandatory.  (ie: My forum join date is Oct of last year though I have been using my Rokus for about 3 or more years.)

You can turn off email notifications of PMs, as well as email for many other things in your settings. There's also a "Turn off all email notifications" setting.

The images in your posts show your inbox.  If you select an individual message (the only one in your case) then, with the individual message displayed, you get options such as Friend, Ignore, Report, Delete, Reply.  The way you select a message is by clicking on the title.

BTW I never signed up to this community until AFTER receiving email updates to spam messages that were delivered to my PM inbox!  That is how completely asinine this forum is.

Auto sign up, auto allow all PMs, auto email updates to spam messages.

WTF.. I stand behind my "WTF" in title completely.

Also I sat there an was looking at the PM for a few minutes and had no options as discussed above. I finally figured out that one line in the preview, or whatever that is, is the actual link to the actual PM. Another asinine and illogical design decision.  Another WTF moment in this bass ackwards forum.

So after finding the "mystery link" to the mystery "real" PM (stupid interface!), I finally see the options to report, ignore, etc..

I've been on the internet since it's inception and this forum is the worst. I imagine they will have a data breach and leak all our personal info and passwords very shortly. Seems this form is designed and run by incompetents.

That's weird as I went three years as a Roku user with nothing from this forum.  Then I signed up a few months ago to start posting and then received emails referring to me by the name that I chose for the forum (a few months ago).

When did you get your first spam?  It's odd because this thread starts on Monday, yet your profile says you joined: "01-02-2021".

I didn't get on the internet full-time until 1982 myself, but there have been lots of changes!  I have to agree that some of these latest and greatest integrated forum/customer care things like Khoros don't really appeal to me either.  But like I keep telling my Mom: I didn't write it!  I don't know WHY they made it that way! "

just a short question

if everything is so ...... what are you doing here ? and why ?

the forum is a free service offered by Roku and it is optional .... so ....... just dont use it ..."

WTF that is the entire point of this BS!   I did not sing up for this POS forum and did not use it and was not here. I was FORCED to make a ROKU account to set up a TV. Then all of the sudden I got a SPAM in my inbox from a forum I never singed up for, DO you understand now?

The only reason i am here is to find out what the **bleep** I am getting spam PMs in a forum I never singed up for, and email notification for those lovely SPAM PMs I never asked for.

Obviously ROKU is auto-signing people up to this POS forum and AUTO- signing people up for email notifications for SPAM PMs.

I had to sing up to make this thread yet I was already getting SPAM PM EMAIL updates.   WTF WTF WTF on three different levels of WTF ROKU.  Asinine. Then I get chucke heads asking me why I am even here. LOL..  4th level WTF.

I was talking about inception of world wide web, not "the internet".  Been on since it was widely available to the public, not when Al Gore thinks he invented it. Still this forum must be one of the worst I have ever seen.

WTF WTF WTF ... WTF ROKU. ... WTF.

But to be fair, so far, one out of approximately 50 million current customers is saying this.

I've found that when I get to my 2nd or 3rd, WTF, it's always best to step back and reconsider whether my assumptions are accurate.  Likewise, if a few hundred more people arrive with the same complaint, then I would change my assumption that Roku registration hasn't changed since I signed up.

Reporting scumbag spammers and mods and admins do nothing.

PM spammer still probably creating 1000 spam PMs a day and ROKU does nothing.

And BTW he was spamming PMs on the same day he made account so that post from ROKU about stopping people from spamming by not letting them spam PMs if they just created an account is BS too.

See.. that was bogus. They guy spammed on the same day he created the account!

And it's obviously a huge problem here and ROKU are incompetent and won't do anything about it.

Any other smart remarks trying to defend this forum, the admins, or ROKU on this subject?
No?   Thought not.

Re: SPAM private messages WTF

I am not a moderator here, but I do mod on two other web forums. In the past few weeks I've seen a huge increase in spam posts. I can delete and ban a user, and within an hour they've posted something else under a new account. It's a cat and mouse game trying to keep up, and this forum is far more public than the ones I assist on. And I know as a mod I can't see private messages sent from one user to another, so there's no way for a mod to watch for those. We have to wait for them to post something public before they can be caught.
