Roku IS censoring, NOT a question any longer

I've spent considerable time reading posts (search censorship or censor) in the Roku community discussion site and see SEVERAL forms of censorship (Merriam definition - 'the institution, system, or practice of censoring')

I encourage you THE CUSTOMERS to hold Roku accountable. Freedom (e.g. 1st amendment) is not free

Do what's right Roku. What your doing across your platform and over time is WRONG in so many ways.

Re: Roku IS censoring, NOT a question any longer

@Skiff

In line with your other postings regarding Newsmax not being included under the "News" category of the Roku Channel LiveTV guide, it has been this way since the introduction of the categories.  Roku sometimes has too many "idea people" behind the scenes and just poor implementation.  I haven't bothered to check lately, but many of the Movie channels were missing from the Movie category at one time.

If intentional, then just deprive them Roku of any potential Roku ad revenue and watch Newsmax via their standalone channel/app (https://channelstore.roku.com/search/newsmax), or watch it on many of the other free channels/apps like Pluto, Plex, KlowdTV, and Rumble.

----

With streaming, you will often find it easier to just try and find an alternative way to stream your preferred content.  Or just set up your own device so that Newmax is available under your Favorites.  It is on channel 190.  All the News/Opinion are under the 100's.  Does it really matter that much that it is not showing under the News category.  I personally think the categories is horribly implemented, especially when it switches to a category during scrolling.  Roku tried to copy Pluto's guide, and just did a poor job.  I really think it is that simple.

Re: Roku IS censoring, NOT a question any longer

Roku is a private company that provides a service as well as the hardware itself. They hold the right to control the material that is provided via their service. There are Terms of Service that any provider that desires to stream onto Roku devices must agree to and follow.

I'm not making any judgement for or against any specific provider. But Roku has the legal right to control what is available on their devices. They have had legal issues in some countries when they were more lax about what content they allowed. After that, they became quite strict about the allowed content. If the content is in violation of the Terms of Service, they have a legal responsibility to remove it. They themselves could be found liable for allowing content that is in violation. If you look at the Apple app store on iTunes, you find many of the same restrictions on content.

Re: Roku IS censoring, NOT a question any longer

I appreciate your comments but you say “…they COULD be found liable…” and “..IF the content is in violation….”?! I’m talking about what they ARE doing. For example, my post is one of business practice. Has nothing to do with content but rather THEIR conscience decision to simply exclude NewsMax from their news “group”. WHY? Again liability has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Re: Roku IS censoring, NOT a question any longer

@AvsGunnar made a post while I was typing my first response, and that is it in a nutshell. Newsmax is available on Roku. Someone has simply miscataloged the channel. I just searched the channel store and it pops right up. So you're seeing a conspiracy where none exists. The channel is available, no problem. Just do a search for the channel name and it's right there.

Thank you and to be clear I'm not a NewsMax employee or do I have any stake in the channel. I do and will continue however to fight against censorship and for freedom of speech.

Re: Roku IS censoring, NOT a question any longer

@atc98092 Thank you for your reply. I didn't state in any of my post any conspiracy? I am however stating fact. NewsMax is not listed in the Roku Live news group/filter. Ok, if it's "miscataloged" as you mention (I don't know?) then when can I (a Roku customer) and others customers expect to see it "cataloged"... again if your right? It's a simple fix - so fix it.

Re: Roku IS censoring, NOT a question any longer

When fixed? We have no idea. It will depend on what sort of priority Roku feels this needs. Compared to some other issues they have with the OS, I would rate this as pretty low.

Re: Roku IS censoring, NOT a question any longer

In addition to priority, technology work efforts include the level of effort required to make the change by the team and this one is simple - really. ‘Add NewsMax to news group’ Shouldn’t “the voice of the customer” have input into the priority? Anyway, enough talk. I look forward to Roku acknowledging the problem I reported over a week ago and making a commitment to their customers to fix it.

Liberal at best wanting to exclude people who defend President trump like Newsmax. Stop trying to make the world yours, screw that nasty abc123 group and stop deliberately trying to make everyone elses lives bad and worry about your **bleep** self and money and whatnot thanks and have a good day.
