You used the term "knock-off". In reality all those other media streaming players are knock offs of the Roku, which was the first major home streaming player, dating back to 2008.
The RokuOS does not support installing apps via side loading. It never has. The Roku channel store has literally thousands of channels available. What specifically would you like to install that isn't there? If you're thinking of something like VLC or Kodi, they're not available on Roku simply because they don't offer a compatible app. Roku used a highly modified version of the Linux kernel as the core to the RokuOS. But that doesn't mean you can simply install any Linux app on it. Any app/channel for Roku has to be written in a supported programming language. A Linux app written in C++ won't work, period. Roku uses a programming language called Bright Script, and it's specific to Roku. You can't take an Android APK file and install it, because it won't work.
