My old WdMycloud sync up nicely with both of my roku ultra devices. The old wdmyclud is becoming a legacy device. I tried to use a WD Mycloud Home device. Apparently it needs a piece of Plex software to read the myCloud home remotely. Anyone have suggestions for a product that will do that, or possibly another WD product that will ?
Not completely following you. Are you using the included DLNA server functionality of the MyCloud? That should appear within the Roku Media Player (RMP) channel automatically. It has nothing to do with Plex. But if you do run a Plex server on your MyCloud, or if you're running Plex on a computer that uses the NAS for its media storage location, then yes you need to have the Plex channel installed on your Roku.
If DLNA functionality is what you're looking for, there are a number of products available that can be installed on a computer or NAS device on your network. I'm partial to Serviio, and wrote the profiles it uses for Roku devices. Emby is another good product, and it also offers a Roku channel, similar to Plex. And Plex itself is capable of acting as a DLNA server, although for Roku devices I recommend using the actual Plex channel instead of RMP.
I have two different devices. The old device still works fine. The new device the mycloud home does not. If there is a setting for DLNA on the new device I am not sure where it is. I got a warning in the fall that my old device would not longer be supported. I was also told that an nice discount would be coming for a new device. I did not look at the specifications of the devices offered. I went with the My cloud Home based on price. I did speak with WD on three occasions regarding being able to stream to a roku. Reading now tells me MyCloud Home may not support DLNA natively. The device I should have purchased is the MyCloud ex2. I trusted the support staff’s word. I should have looked to DNLA compliance. I am asking for a return. Then I will look at a EX2. I am waiting for an answer from them. The MyCloud home is sort of worthless to me. If you have other ideas let me know. I am always willing to save money. Thanks for your response.
It's still possible to use your MyCloud with a different DLNA server, or something like Plex. But it requires running the media server on something other than the MyCloud and only point to it as the media library location. I run both Serviio and Plex on two different computers on my network, one being more of a test server. While they both have media files on hard drives directly connected to them, they are also capable of connecting to a different device on your network, such as your MyCloud, and stream the media from there.
Once you've resolved any possible return of the box you have, if you have further questions, feel free to come back here and ask.
I have read that another limitation to plex is that it will only run mp3 files ? Thanks again. The adventure with WD could be drawn out, Thanks

Perhaps that's a limitation of Plex on your MyCloud (assuming it could be installed on it). But Plex itself has no such limitation. It can play virtually any media: movies, music or photos. Same with most DLNA servers.
The reading about mp3 is not new. When I first used the roku media server I did have to convert mkv to mp3. That has not been the case for a real long time. I am waiting to hear from WD, Thanks
Thanks for the help. Return in process. In the end WD seems to be coming through. However if I was on a tight time frame I might be more aggravated. I am just a consumer. I just wish initially when I was doing a product search the conversations could have been more complete and this could have been avoided. I did call for help after all. But the big thing is WD understood and came through. Good for them and in the end me.
I have an additional question you maybe able to answer. Will the Roku be able to see more that one DNLA device ? If I have two devices both being myClould devices will i be able to choose between the two ? Thanks

Yes, not a problem. I currently have three different DLNA sources on my network, and the Roku Media Player channel sees them all. You select your source, then move to the content.
