No More YouTube On Roku? It's Rapidly Becoming Reality

Jump to solution

God, I hope this does not actually happen.  But if it does, I am ready for it!

I suppose I'm ready too, in the sense that there are so many commercials when I try to view a youtube video on Roku, that I just don't go in there much anymore.

Based on the Google statement I saw on some other sites, they promised to retain the channel on Roku devices for users that currently have it installed, same as YouTube TV is still available for users that had it installed prior to the contract ending. But as others have said, I have other options for watching YT beyond my Roku devices.

That said, I am in complete agreement with the public statements Roku has made. I will not stop using Roku if YouTube was no longer available on it. For every other online provider I use (HBO, Disney, Prime) my Rokus work better than my far more expensive Shield players. So if I end up with my Shield for local media and YouTube, I'll still be using the Roku for everything else.

This article also seems to indicate the liklihood of losing Youtube on Roku in the near future..............

Will move to Apple TV or another streaming device!

@tawnyncarson I wouldn't toss it. You will find that every streaming player on the market is lacking something. There is no one single player that does "everything". It's certainly possible another streaming device will satisfy you today. And it might even work well for some time. Or you might find that while the new box has YouTube, it is lacking something else you really want. You've already paid for the Roku. Use it for whatever else you still stream. Very few users buy a streaming player for only one service. Your Roku will still continue to do everything else it does today.

Also, as long as you currently have YouTube installed, Google has vowed to continue to support those users on Roku devices. If it does go away, it will only be gone for new users, that didn't have it installed before Google pulled it.

I am failing to see the big deal with Google removing Youtube from Roku.  Youtube can still be cast to the Roku devices or brought up in a web browser and then played directly on a TV with an HDMI cable.  I only watch it in guest mode anyway so not bombarded with their recommendations.  I wonder how many remember when using their web browser was the only way to watch Youtube in the beginning.

I'd advise Roku to hold the line if their assertions re: this dispute are sincere.  If it becomes unavailable for new users or unable to reinstall for existing users if removed, I will just uninstall it from my Roku.  Good riddance, they can have it.  Let Google do everything/anything they want to on their own Chromecast device.  Almost as if they are panicked they cannot control the entire delivery system of content/information across competing streaming services.  Additionally, when I think of Google, the words "good faith" do not necessarily and immediately come to mind.

Although I am sure they will be genuine disagreement among users and legitimate concerns expressed here on this topic, I think this Community is about to be inundated with bot accounts and an over-exaggeration of how many Roku devices are going to find their way to the trashcan.
