go.roku a scam?

is the $15 upgrade that was on the homescreen a scam? I received my roku and it works but I now have a recurring charge on my credit card. Does that stop when I reach a certain amount?  If not how do I stop the recurring charge?  The phone number on my bank account bill is just one number off  being 816-272-8107 and it says to hang up and go to go.roku.com/charge help.  There is no such place that I can find.  Do I have to cancel my credit card now?

Re: go.roku a scam?

Roku does not have upgrades of any kind. They do not charge for accounts or support. Yes, it is a scam, and you need to dispute the charge on your credit card. There's no such web page as go.roku.com/charge, and that phone number is registered to something in Lees Summit, or Kansas CIty MO. It is listed as a scammer phone number on some phone ID web sites.

Well, except for the "upgrades" link at the bottom of the page at https://www.roku.com/

And go.roku.com seems as legitimate a subdomain as support.roku.com or my.roku.com or www.roku.com

And as far as the phone number, there's this, one digit off:

Roku needs to address this.

Well, those upgrades are for upgrading to a higher level player, or adding accessories. Not user accounts or support plans.

Yes, go.roku.com does appear to go to the authentic Roku domain, but that particular page doesn't exist. Perhaps scammers are hoping someone will just do a web search and hit their site instead.

I could certainly see a scam site purposely getting a phone number one digit off to catch a few unwary callers. Just yesterday I mis-dialed my credit union by one digit, and reached some flim flam artists trying to make you think your banking institution is making you some terrific deal. Once I got my real CU, they said they had heard similar from other customers. So it must work.

But I agree that Roku needs to take further action.

@puzzler2

Thanks for the post.

Please send me a PM with your Roku account email address, and include the serial number of the Roku device from Settings>System>About. I'll be able to assist you further from there.

Thanks,
Danny
