How do YOU watch live sports on Roku?

Hi Roku Community!

With the Superbowl coming up soon, basketball in full swing, and baseball a bit out, there's lots to talk about when it comes to streaming sports on your Roku device.

Need a start on viewing your favorite live sports on Roku without cable? We recommend checking out our in-depth blog post here.

We want to know… what sport do you follow the most and what channel do you recommend watching it? Let us know in the comments below.

Thanks,
Danny

Re: How do YOU watch live sports on Roku?

I have a subscription to ESPN Plus for ESPN Plus' exclusive live content for the University that I graduated from a long time ago. I also use Xfinity Stream on one Roku TV that does not have a cable hookup I watch college football the most out of all the sports that I do watch. Fortunately, for me cable TV is very affordable where I live. I like the set top boxes and remotes that I have used over the years from Xfinity and Verizon. It is unlikely that I will ever cut the cord in my lifetime.

Re: How do YOU watch live sports on Roku?

Part of the answer depends on how it's being broadcast. I have an antenna that I can use with Tablo (though Sling TV/Air TV works well) to put it on my local network. I can then watch ABC, CBS, Fox, or NBC on any of my Roku devices on any of my TVs.

If it's not available over the air, but on ESPN, and I want to watch it -- for me, it's college football -- I subscribe to Sling TV Orange. That's the cheapest way to get ESPN. I'll then authenticate the ESPN app, since that's the easiest way for me to find a game on that network.

If it's on Fox Sports, I'll add Sling Blue. If I don't want to watch Fox Sports, Sling TV is cheapest. And if I need to add it, it's still cheaper than other live streaming services that carry both ESPN and Fox Sports.

I'll subscribe the first weekend of the season, and get 30 days of ESPN. At the end of the 30 days, I'll cancel, save the next five days, then subscribe again when the next game I want to watch airs. Three subscriptions covers 15 weekends. Then subscribe again for the bowl games.

Rest of the year, I don't really watch much sports.

Re: How do YOU watch live sports on Roku?

Have no interest in sports, so don't have any subscriptions that offer it. I do have strong OTA local stations if something is being broadcast.

I use Tennis Channel year-round, adding ESPN Plus when the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open air. This is, hands down, the best way I've found to watch tennis, because these apps let you choose from a number of live matches, instead of simply watching what the networks are airing. They offer on-demand matches too.

As for price, that amounts to a little over one cable bill -- as opposed to twelve.

NFL Game Pass doesn't feature live games, but it's an incredible deal because it offers on-demand replays shorly after the games air. $10 and patience gets you all the main action from ESPN, Prime Video, NFL Network, and the broadcast networks, all in one place, plus some older Super Bowls and NFL Films specials.

Roku device users can access plenty of live sports through tennis , which is available through the ESPN channel on the Roku Channel Store. Live sports on tennis hunters include MLB and NHL action. There are also CFL, MLS, NASCAR, UFC, WNBA, WWE, and NCAA events. However, it does not show any live NBA or NFL games.

Re: How do YOU watch live sports on Roku?

Right after I became a cord-cutter, I realized that streaming is PERFECT for tennis in particular, because there are multiple contests occurring at an event, and streaming lets you choose the one you'd prefer to see. I always wanted that ability when I had cable. Someone at Roku could post an article on this.

One big one that I forgot to mention in my initial post. I am also subscriber to DirectTV NFL Sunday Ticket Stream version, so I can watch out of market NFL games.

I just use Game Pass, which is a lot cheaper. Can't watch live, but the short wait isn't that big of a deal to me.

Live, TV is a must have for me and the extra cost for DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket Stream version is well worth the price to me.
