2018 Roku Premiere and Premier+, Spotify, Google Assistant Integration

https://www.engadget.com/2018/09/24/rok ... streaming/

Hate them continuing the horrid naming conventions and the ridiculous amount of SKUs, but all good news in there.

And now the wait begins.  Wish they could have gotten Alexa support, hopefully in the future I guess.

Re: 2018 Roku Premiere and Premier+, Spotify, Google Assistant Integration

I notice the Premiere + is a Walmart exclusive which makes me wonder since Walmart is notorious for pushing mfg to sell devices at a much lower price; and that means lower quality and fewer features. I'd love to have Google Asst, but my Roku 3 has been so reliable, I find it difficult to justify going to a new device especially with all the audio and other issues I see with them.

I'm seeing Google Assistant as a feature of ROS 9 (https://blog.roku.com/roku-os-9), which means it might be coming to the 3.

Re: 2018 Roku Premiere and Premier+, Spotify, Google Assistant Integration

As the owner of both an original Premiere 4620 and Premiere+ 4630, I don't particularly like the recycling of the Premiere name for these new, less capable models.

The original Premiere 4620 and Premiere+ 4630 were fully capable models that were not all that different from the Ultra, minus a few features such as the USB port on both models and wired Ethernet/microSD slot on the Premiere 4620, but fundamentally the same hardware and capabilities.

The first thing that jumps out at me with these new Premiere/Premiere+ models is that they no longer have dual-band 802.11ac wireless; instead they are single-band 802.11bgn only. That's a step backwards, as the 5 GHz band is both less crowded and can achieve faster throughput than the 2 GHz band. The new Premiere+ does not have a wired Ethernet port or microSD slot like the previous Premiere+ 4630 model had.

When it comes right down to it, these two new models are essentially 4K versions of the current Express model. I'm not suggesting that they're junk, but they are certainly not in the same class as their predecessors with which they share the same name. I'm sure that for the majority of people, the new Premiere+ will be a very good value for 4K with the enhanced voice remote included for just $50. No one should be fooled into thinking that these new models share DNA with the original Premiere and Premiere+, however.

Re: 2018 Roku Premiere and Premier+, Spotify, Google Assistant Integration

Roku seems to keep recycling device names for some reason. Look how many versions were called a Roku 2, sometimes with suffixes (HD, XD, XS). When they came out with names instead of numbers I thought that nonsense was over. Nope!  Smiley LOL

Re: 2018 Roku Premiere and Premier+, Spotify, Google Assistant Integration

They have to keep it under 6 and they were already at 4. Since Roku is basically the number 6 in Japanese. I think they switched to the other names to signify actual value. It's clear a ultra is better than premier. Same with 1,2 and 3. But then when you make a 4 you aren't going to sell much 1's. So they phase those out.

In effect this signals the end of the new lines number one model, or the weakest. The Roku Express and express+. One can bet those are not manufactured anymore. Units left destined for bargain bins and clearance racks.

It also opens the door for a new ultra with 3GB ram and dolbyvision with Atmos/truehd/dts-hd. Hey Roku where can I get me one of these new ultras? Take my money!

Well, I mean, they technically are the second Roku Premiere+ and it does HD so...  Roku Premiere+ 2 HD!

Thanks..looks like OS9 will have some good features...Just got the trial Pandora Premium invitation which might be interesting now that Sirius owns them. I was going to pull the trigger on the 4630 (?) Ultra but it seems like all of the Ultra's have audio issues with the version 8 firmware. My 3 passes all audio formats through without problems, though at some point I'll want a 4K device since I have an OLED .
