it happens at the point no matter the program it gets worse the closer it is to the end to the point it does not advance at all and keeps acting like it is buffering but there is no internet or connection issue on my end or with any other apps it is updated both hbo max and roku
What do you mean by “advanced”? You probably should check your “Advanced” Settings (assuming that’s what they call it) on the app. ~ Jordan

Does the issue only occur on HBO Max or across other channels installed on your Roku device?
If you haven't tried yet, you can remove the affected channel and re-install it. To ensure the process is successful, make sure to restart your device before adding the channel back in. We would recommend doing this from the Settings menu by navigating to Settings > System > Power (If you do not see a Power submenu, skip to the next step.) > System restart.

The steps are 1, 2 and 3.
1. Remove the app from the device — click the * button, press “delete channel.”
2. Settings > System > Power > System restart (some Roku models), or Settings > System > System restart (other Roku models).
3. Reinstall the app.
