YouTube update of 1/19/21 crashes older Roku

As of Jan. 20, 2021, the YouTube app no longer works on our older model Roku -- it's a Roku 2. When you try to launch the app, the entire Roku device freezes up, after several seconds, the screen goes dark and the device reboots. I've tried multiple times, including after uninstalling and reinstalling the app. I noticed that the app was last updated on 1/19/21.

Does anyone have an older Roku on which the YouTube app is still working? Or for that matter, can anyone confirm that the latest YouTube update actually works on a newer Roku device?

This is also happening to the Roku 3.

Have done full factory reset, reloaded all the apps, but same issue

Re: YouTube update of 1/19/21 crashes older Roku

I'm having the same issue with my Roku 3 as well. I haven't found a long term solution but short term removing the app, restarting, and adding the app back in has helped twice. The issue is whenever I stop watching and the roku goes into standby mode I have to do it again. I've used this thing for years with minimal issues other then minor things expected of an older product, but this is just so abrupt.

I’m having the same issue. I have a roku 2 and the YouTube app has not work these past few days. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling..everything. So I’m wondering is this going to get fix or I have to get another player?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the posts.

Can you please provide us the following information:
-Roku device model
-serial number
-device ID
-software OS/version
(these can all be found in Settings > System > About)
-does this issue occur on a specific channel? if so, what channel and what version/build is the channel (this can be found be selecting the channel on the Home screen and pressing the * button)
-tracker ID when this issue occurs (when you see this issue occur, press the Home button 5 times, followed by the Back button 5 times)
-steps to reproduce the issue you are seeing

Once we have this information we will pass it along to the appropriate team to investigate further.

Thanks,
Danny

Re: YouTube update of 1/19/21 crashes older Roku

Roku 3

1GU48X086125

4200X

9.4.0 build 4200-04

This is only occurring with YouTube, and only as of 2 days ago. YouTube app version 1.0 build 93000123

ID 25-031-719

To reproduce the error, click once on the YouTube channel button. Roku will freeze then restart, every single time. I have manually restarted Roku, power cycled it, removed and reinstalled YouTube. Nothing has fixed this issue.

Re: YouTube update of 1/19/21 crashes older Roku

I have a 3800X Streaming Stick and a 4210 Roku 2. Both are running the current YouTube app. That is not to say a number of people have reported issues with the new version.

Re: YouTube update of 1/19/21 crashes older Roku

I doubt Google will ever admit it, but it appears they are dropping support for older devices. Everything I've seen posted here points to all devices older than about 2016 seem to be having issues.

All anyone can really do is to contact Google and complain about their latest update. Google owns YouTube and has sole control over their channel on Roku devices.
