Re: YouTube TV vs Roku negotiations

If true, I'm not happy about it. I have two ROKU TVs that I bought specifically because they supported YouTube TV!

Would I pay a little more each month to keep YouTube TV? YES! I would.

If this is not about money, and it is just about taking a stand against Google, then I would not retain allegiance to ROKU!

Hey ROKU - what about a ROKU TV buyback from your more angry YouTubeTV/ROKU TV users!?!

I agree completely.  The price of gas goes up, food goes up, insurance goes up...the cost of living is constantly increasing and any reasonable adult has a grasp on this.  While I would expect the increases to be within reason, I wouldn't throw a fit paying a couple extra dollars a month.   I hope that this is the case.  The more research I am doing makes it seem like this whole thing is just a misunderstanding, but who knows!

Re: YouTube TV vs Roku negotiations

Don't think it is a scam because it was reported in Variety and also here https://deadline.com/2021/04/roku-youtube-tv-service-could-go-dark-google-predatory-monopoly-1234743...

Agree though it would of been helpful for Roku to have added information about the preferred way to contact them and also a little bit more about what Google was actually demanding.

Re: YouTube TV vs Roku negotiations

Roku needs to remember it's core business is selling a Device that provides access to streaming services.  It should not be a competing streaming service.  I don't need Roku to protect me from a streaming service., but to just give me access to the streaming services I want.

You can rest assured whatever Google is doing, it's impacting Roku's business interest, more than our customer interest.

HBO, Peacock, Spectrum, and now Google TV.  The issue is clearly Roku trying to compete with these streaming services with their own Roku channel service and other interests.

Roku needs to get back to just selling Devices and not being its own streaming service, as we can go elsewhere to access major streaming services Roku says they are "protecting" us from.

Re: YouTube TV vs Roku negotiations

Such a good point, Bob.  It's kind of frustrating that Roku is potentially inconveniencing its customers under the guise of protection.  I wouldn't be surprised if you're right, about the business interests taking precedence.  Everyone that isn't living under a rock is well aware that Google has done some shady things in the past.  If I fully didn't support Google, I obviously would not be using YouTube TV...let the consumers make their own decisions regarding which companies to support/not support.  It's our money after all...

Re: YouTube TV vs Roku negotiations

How about giving me the option to opt in or opt out.  I could care less if Youtube knows what I do in other apps.  I bought my $90 Roku a few months ago strictly for Youtube TV.  Will Roku provide a refund for this bait and switch?   Switching to cable isn't an option because they also removed the app for my local cable provider.

Re: YouTube TV vs Roku negotiations

I'm not happy with either Google or Roku on this.  On one hand, Google is demanding preferential treatment on the Roku platform (highlighted/prioritized search results, etc).  To be fair, Roku isn't asking for more money - this is about a level playing field.  Google is the gorilla in this argument, since they have other platforms to use as leverage.

On the other hand, Roku is willing to drop support for top-tier content providers (channels) if they don't meet Roku's demands, which alienates the user base.

Frankly I find it distasteful that Roku is asking users to reach out to Google.  That's like putting your children in the middle of a marital argument.  Us "children" shouldn't be the ones who suffer.
