Re: Youtube TV cancelling service on Roku

I already switched to Firestick on one of my TVs because Roku dropped access to one of my sports channels.  I understand this time it seems it's less Roku's fault but the end results is the same: another key service I use is being dropped.  Looks like I'll be replacing a few other Roku devices with Firesticks.

That's because of a little something called capitalism, not to mention that the Republican party does not want to protect consumers and does what ever they can to pull the teeth out of the mouths of agencies that exist to enforce the protections. So, expect that from all devices in the future.

All hail U.S. corporations and the uber rich that benefit from them. Robot Indifferent

The email I got from YouTube was that it was Rokus decision not to renew the existing terms. Roku is super antiquated already, just another reason to lose confidence in the brand.

As if Google is going to admit to actively violating antitrust laws, or to being a monopoly.

This is a la cable & satellite TV vs. the networks. It isn't new.

Roku / Google?

I have a pre-order for a new replacement Roku to ship 05/16. I don't know what to do now? If Roku no longer has YouTube TV? Was my only reason for buying to began with.

I bought 4 Roku devices after moving in a year ago.  YouTubeTV went from $49.99 at the start to $64.99 a few months ago.  Now we won't get it at all.  I'm truly sick of these tech companies trying to renegotiate terms to grow their profit picture at the expense of all their customers as they bait and switch.  Both companies should be ashamed and rethink this idiotic dance where one blames the other and only the customers suffer.  If they don't, they will both lose countless customers, including me.

Roku doesn't charge you for use of it's platform. It's always free to the end user. You did make a good point, however. In just four years, Youtube TV increased $20. Taking all this into account, whom do you think is really to blame in a situation like this? The company that charges you for the device ONLY, or the company that will continue to raise it's subscription fee in order to keep it's increasingly greedy shareholder happy? I don't need to be a Youtube TV subscriber to know that Google is a monopolist facing antitrust lawsuits on two continents.

It sounds to me like Roku is trying to stop big YouTube of bullying Roku into higher prices.  Am I wrong?  How many times has Youtube raised prices in the last few years.  Youtube is not innocent in my mind.  Far from it!

$20 in four years.

I see $89.99/month overpriced TV in the Youtube TV subscribers future.

You mean how Peacock TV tried to strong-arm Roku, then backed down and agreed to the terms? Or how HBO Max tried to strong-arm Roku, even suggesting that Roku would disappear by the end of 2020, then backed down and agreed to the terms?

Get yourself an Android TV device. Guaranteed you'll be crying about it sooner rather than later.

Re: Can't find YouTube TV on my stick

@Akutra wrote:

I found the issue. Since I did not have it installed and only tried to install it today, it is because of the Google-Roku dispute. I wish they would solve this, now I have to decide Roku or YouTubeTV. Should wait for a few days and see if it is resolved?

I seriously doubt any removal is permanent. YouTube TV is the 2nd or 3rd largest live streaming service, depending on which numbers you look at. Roku is by far the largest streaming platform. It's in both parties' best interests to resolve this.

However, if you have decided you really want a live streaming service -- not everybody needs one, after all -- and if that service is going to be YouTube TV, then you might wish to wait as long as you can before deciding on a different platform.

It's about Youtube TV wanting to offer 4k HD in future, but they can't with Roku's current video encoders, Google needs Roku to accept AV1 format encoders on all devices and TV's so they can deliver video in 4k, but with less server storage space and bandwidth. Roku would have to change proprietary formula they use to keep everything locked down to exert the most money.

That's from what I gather.

WTF are you talking about? The Roku Ultra streams in 4K [of which I have two], not that there is really any 4K content to stream, as does some of the newer Roku TV's [e.g. TCL , of which I also have two].

I know for a fact that Google is an oversized child facing antitrust lawsuits here and in Europe. I know it's greedy and has raised the cost of it's service $20 in four years. I am smart enough to know that the company that isn't charging me $.01 to access it's platform isn't screwing anyone.

Re: Youtube TV Contract Dispute

I have 3 Premier which I got over the last 2 years or so for $30 average , So I just went to Bestbuy and ordered a Chromecast GoogleTV (Google comes up with the WORST names) , however the guys on reddit claim it is just a dongle (like Roku) with a remote (that may control the volume).

So all I have to say to Roku, after having them for 10 years is "Way to go Guys".

At any rate I did try out Casting (from PC and phone) and that seem to work fine . However I am casting to the Roku, so that might be a problem if this fight gets ugly.

Actually I was pretty impressed with how easy it was to Cast , then I found out my 4 year old granddaughter does it all the time, while my daughter was Zooming to her classes last spring. But she is way smart.

Re: Youtube TV Contract Dispute

Not sure I see your problem. I also have 3 Roku, Premiere which work great. But Roku has p-ss me off with this, so today I ordered a ChromeCast GoogleTV (the worst names are from Google). It is $50, and is a dongle with a remote that may control the volume. You can not get it on Amazon , but EVERYWHERE else, Google, BestBuy, Target, etc These guys are ALL in restraint of trade. Hopefully the interface will be as good as Roku, but I am sure it will push Google stuff.

Also for now you should try Casting just in case. Your PC or Smart phone will login to YTTV, and then you cast. After that you do not need the PC or phone to be on. It seems my 4 year grand daughter has been doing this (for Disney) since last Spring. But she is very Advanced for her age.
