i just found out that my old Roku stick wont support Britbox, and my smart TV is too old to have the app. If i buy the Roku express will i be able to watch britbox on this at all?

Per the Britbox support page:

We support all Roku devices, except for Roku 1 (as Roku has stopped supporting this model).

So in theory your stick should be supported. However, the early Stick models (purple version) probably simply don't have the processing power. Any new Roku should be fine. I recommend paying a bit more and going with the Premiere. Too many WiFi complaints with the Express.
