Updating Apps from the home screen by pressing the asterisk button

What is being updated when you select an app and press on the asterisk and select update?

I would guess that the app is updated with additional features.

When you press the asterisk "*" button on your remote, it basically updates the specific application. It will first check for updates, if any available, it will automatically download it and your current application will have the latest features.
