So I've seen on other devices that movies such as "The Little Things" play back in 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10 etc. When I go to the Roku device HBO Max app for the same movie, it says HD and no other formats. On that same Roku device I'm able to play 4K and HDR content on Netflix, Disney+, AppleTV+ and Amazon Prime. So I clearly know it's not my TV or the Roku device. Which by the way the Roku is set to 4K 60hz HDR and I even went into my TV settings and turned on the 4K HDR etc for this specific individual input as well.
Which I'm wondering why HBO/Warner would drop the ball on a highly requested feature that is available on pretty much every other device that supports 4K HDR including on a similar equivalent device, an Amazon Fire Stick.
Same question as the original poster. Is this a Roku issue or an HBO MAX issue? 4k was available for WW84 and 4k is available for The Little Things on my Smart TV HBO MAX app but not my Roku Ultra 2020. Why is that? Was 4k content not part of the HBO MAX/Roku deal?
While the audio/video quality tagging in the HBO Max (for Roku) isn't accurate, the streams themselves are at the appropriate quality levels (4K/HDR/Atmos/5.1/etc) relative to the device configuration and content.
(e.g. Wonder Woman is 4KDV/HDR10 w/Atmos/5.1 on 4800/4670/etc, even though its tagged as just "HD", (and no Atmos/5.1)).
Its a platform specific bug (probably easily addressable via server configuration/provisioning, but so far hasnt been a priority for HBO).
And to answer the other question, this is an HBO issue, nothing to do with Roku. HBO has issues with other platforms as well. For example, Max doesn't offer 5.1 audio on the Shield, or any Android device apparently. So I stick with my Ultra for that.

HBO Max is properly streaming Atmos/5.1 on the FS4K and TS4K, with the same version/build as the Shield (the GCCWGTV behaves the same as the Shield though).
Just had the app update on my Shield. Game of Thrones is still 2 channel PCM on it, while the Roku is DD+ 5.1. Seems HBO doesn't like Nvidia.
