Re: Are you being returned to Home screen after selecting a channel?

Why is Roku not making a formal statement about this problem? It continues to propose remedies that do not work or only work for a few people. The problem is occurring with multiple channels, not just with Hulu, Doesn't this mean the problem is systemic rather than with our individual devices?

Let's hear what you are actually doing about the problem, Roku.

Re: Are you being returned to Home screen after selecting a channel?

ROKU TV -  7111X
  • TCL model - 55S401
  • Device ID - CN600C187041
  • So far I have been having problems with Netflix (for a couple of months); I have uninstalled, reinstalled, reset the TV and if it fixes it at all it only lasts a day or two. I am now having problems with Disney+ and it just started today (08/23/2021).
    • Disney+ - Version 1.15  Build 2021080400
    • Netflix - Version 5.1  Build 98079443
  • Issue ID 41-338-274

@coulterd

You didnt mention your Roku model # and firmware version: Settings/System/About

Known solutions/workarounds for apps not loading/closing to Home:

1) Check for updates: Settings/System/System updates/Check now - try again

2) Change your Theme to the Roku Default: Settings/Theme/Restore default theme - try again

3) Change your Screensaver to a Roku clock: Settings/Theme/Screensavers - try again

4) Remove SD card (if installed) - try again

5) Remove app, RESTART ROKU: Settings/System/System restart/Restart, Add app - try again

6) Network connection reset: Settings/System/Advanced system settings/Network connection reset - try again

7) Completely unplug power from Roku for 10-15 minutes - try again

😎 Factory reset: Settings/System/Advanced system settings/Factory reset <--- last resort

NOTE for #5: Do not remove the YouTube TV app - you will not get the app back until the end of the dispute

Re: Are you being returned to Home screen after selecting a channel?

I've been following this thread for a while. I have a Roku Ultra which does this constantly with all apps - Hulu, Spectrum, HBO Max, Discovery+ etc. Seems like Roku has no idea what's going on. My Roku Ultra was purchased in 2020 but I just installed it to replace an older one. Using the included power adapter, switched HDMI cords and HDMI ports, etc. Restarting the Roku seems to help for a bit.

I really, really hope Roku can get their stuff together because I've got so many Rokus and have recommended them to everyone over the years. When it's really bad, I can't watch anything because it keeps exiting out across multiple apps and I just want to throw it away. Not looking forward to dropping Roku because it's going to be a pain in the rear AND expensive but my Roku is worthless at this point. I haven't seen it happen on my Express 4K+ yet - and we have two of the sticks on lesser used TVs.

Try the list in the post before yours.

Re: Are you being returned to Home screen after selecting a channel?

The list is ridiculous. It is a bunch of jerry-riggings thrown against the wall in the hope of fixing some things some how maybe if not forever for a few hours or maybe.....whatever. Although not everyone is having the problem, many are. Many, like me, have been living with the problem and just assumed, until checking here, that it's an idiosyncratic defect. I assume the request for model numbers is a search for a common denominator. In any case, it's a systemic problem that should have a single remedy. It appears now that even if you upgrade your gear, the problem continues.

Re: Are you being returned to Home screen after selecting a channel?

@Bachelard

If using the list and one of the items solves the issue of apps not opening/closing to Home is "ridiculous", then yes, its "ridiculous".

However, the countless number of users who have used it successfully might disagree.

Just to be very clear, that entire list was created, culled and tweaked based on known effective multiply-reported/confirmed workarounds/solutions.

Not every item works for every model or configuration (hence the ordered list), but all items have worked for many people, many times.

Nor does the list always work - there are some devices/configurations for which the entire list is ineffective.

Also to be clear, the list wouldnt be necessary if Roku coded RokuOS more capably/competently, and tested it more extensively before release.  Unfortunately, there is little to no pre-release testing because Roku (like many companies now) has decided to use its installed consumer device base as its QA process (this is why they use limited/staggered rollouts for firmware releases...)

The last 3 major version upgrades (9.3/9.4/10) have been particularly bad, to put it charitably - everything from killing wireless connectivity (especially for 2.4Ghz models) effectively bricking them, to causing massive widespread app load crashing for just about every major app/service (hence the list), to rendering remotes inoperable/re-programming the TV control (hence a different list post), to broken video/audio playback modes for local streamed media (unresolved), to broken default display modes (including the forever regressive HDCP errors), and on and on.

Whoever manages RokuOS development (and from my understanding there isnt much - they have a flat mostly non-hierarchical employee organization) doesnt seem to have much care or concern for the overall UI/UX (let alone the technical requirements for specific hardware interfaces), and it has gotten worse/more inconsistent over time (the repeat regression bugs are truly staggering for each OS release).

They need to get a very technically competent OS programmer/architect/developer/MANAGER to come in and effectively ride roughshod with the riot act in hand over the entire RokuOS department - they are currently way too tolerant of godawful programming and way too reliant on consumer-based QA to fix it post-release.

Considering they now have around 2000 employees (up from 700 in 2017), they need to expend more employee capital on RokuOS development/management.

So yes, its a "systemic problem" - a RokuOS development, programming, and management one.

Re: Are you being returned to Home screen after selecting a channel?

This did not fix my problem. I have reset the TV, both unplugged and through the TV. I have uninstalled the apps both ways. This needs to be fixed because I am paying for the ability to stream and your device is not allowing me to do this. What is the solution?

Re: Are you being returned to Home screen after selecting a channel?

I was having the same issue with Hulu returning to the home screen and now it fix I had an update to hulu. Check to see what version and build you have if you have version 6.48 build 1 you need to update it to build 2?
