Using roku tv 7127x & roku LE HD streaming device... Neither Roku TV nor #roku streaming device (different tv) will even open HBOMax App at all. Elected (thru roku email) to try (11-30-21 free trial) of HBOMax app channel. Entire system (both) turned off & restarted and STILL NO HBOMax to open, at all... it’s a roku specific problem. Firestick can download & Open, BUT FREE TRIAL is from roku, not Firestick.... Please Help!
I understand and my situation is identical. I even tried the HBO app on my iPad and it would not launch either. It did the same thing as my TV.
I went to the HBO web site, entered the email address that I used for my Ruko account and the clicked the forgot password option. I got an email from HBO with instructions for resetting my HBO account password. Once I reset my password I was able to login to HBO.
Then I returned to my Ruko TV, launched the HBO app and it worked for me. It did not impact my Ruko account.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Does the issue only occur on HBO Max or across other channels installed on your Roku device? Do you receive an error code or message?
If you haven't tried yet, you can remove the affected channel then re-install it. To ensure the process is successful, make sure to restart your device before adding the channel back in. We would recommend doing this from the Settings menu by navigating to Settings > System > System restart > Restart.

I am having the same issue.
I reset my password on the HBO site and that fixed my issue.
I haven’t ever had HBO or HBOMax before, ever. So there is no resetting of password. The HBOMax app will not even open/load at all. This issue is specific only to ROKU devices. (2) TVs- 71400X & 7127X and (1) RokuExpress HD 3930RW ... BOTH TVs & ROKU Express have all up to date software. Both TVs & roku express have all been restarted thru device settings and unplugged for minute & plugged back in. AND there is NO option to delete app thru * on remote. Roku has removed that choice.... now into DAY 4 of TRAL & doesn’t work. HELP!!!

In addition, had to use a PC to log into hbomax website; neither MacBook, iPad, nor iPhone would work . Finally am at least able to utilize “the trial month for hbo” on/with a roku device.

Just wanted to thank you as well...my new Roku stick was having the same problem with accessing my HBOMax channel (one month free trial through Roku, day 2, no access from the beginning). Talked to Roku customer service who was super nice and tried everything she knew, to no avail. I then found your post, followed your instructions, went onto HBOMax.com via my Chrome iPhone app, entered the email I used to sign up with Roku and clicked the "forgot/reset password" link, got an email that I was able to use to "reset" password (actually to create a password, because I didn't have an HBOMax account independent of Roku). Went back to my Roku and now the channel works!!! Hopefully others will find our posts and solve their access issues as well.
