YouTube TV on Roku 3 very buggy

Jump to solution

We're wanting to switch from DirecTV to YouTube TV on our Roku devices, but have been having problems with its operation. It seems that every action requires an extra button press. When we select the YouTube TV app, the screen goes blank until we press another button. When we select a program from our library to play, the screen goes blank (with a buffering symbol), and we start to hear audio, but we don't get picture until we press another button. When we use the transport controls to pause or locate to a different part of the program, the transport controls stay onscreen until we press another button. (* seems to be the safest in these situations.)

It's not a bandwidth issue; when we use YouTube TV controlled from an iPad streaming on a Chromecast, it's fine. When we select Roku as our player in the web interface, we have the same blank video screen problem.

Is there a known fix?

Thanks for reaching out here.

If other channels are performing normally on your device, this is typically an indication that there may be an issue within that specific channel that may need to be addressed by the channel provider/developer. (YouTube TV in this case)

There are a couple recommendations we can offer to see if this helps with your experience:

1. Try removing the channel from the Roku home screen, then restart your device from Settings>System>System restart. Once your device loads up again, add the channel back once more.

2. If you have any channels installed on your device that you don't often use, try removing these. This can sometimes lighten system resources and help improve overall performance.

Ultimately, you will want to contact the channel provider directly to report the issue, request additional support and continue following up. Each channel is built and maintained by the channel provider themselves, and they will be able to best assist with issues you may encounter. You can reach YouTube TV support here: https://support.google.com/youtubetv/?hl=en#topic=7071745

Try reinstalling the app. Do it this way, all these steps, in this order:

  1. Remove the app

  2. Reboot the Roku

  3. Reinstall the app

There's no guarantee that will work, but if there's an issue with the installation of the app, or data in the app being corrupt and causing issues, this should resolve that.

Uninstall/reinstall/reboot seems to have helped.

That's unexpected. The reboot as step 3 is meaningless, meaning you could have left it out and achieved the same results.

For further information, a full reinstallation is Uninstall/reboot/reinstall, in that order. That's not to say what you did is wrong (it worked, after all), but what you did is not a full reinstallation. However, in your case, if it was enough to resolve the problem, and that's good. Just be aware that the reboot between the uninstall and reinstall will remove any stray data stored in memory. A reboot at any other time doesn't do that.

A reinstall without a preceding reboot could retain any issues that are stored on the device. Just for info going forward.

We too have been having issues with YouTube TV on Roku Premier. This usually happens when trying to watch LIVE TV. Click on a problem and press PLAY (center button), you get a swirling circle (like it is trying to download programming), then the screen goes black. The only way out is to press HOME to go back to the Roku home screen.

We are in day 2 of our 5-day YouTube TV trial, so we may opt-out of YouTube TV just based on this alone. A shame.

I agree, I have this issue since I switched from Directv to Roku and Youtube TV. And I get no response from either Roku or Youtube. I cannot believe these 2 billion-dollar companies have such a poor product, and no one offering to help.

Does anyone at these 2 companies actually use this product????  I should not have to wait 5 minutes when switching channels.  FIX THIS PROBLEM!!!

I recently switched to YouTube TV using Roku Express, and I have the same issue, especially on startup:  When I select a program to view on YouTube TV, I sometimes get the swirling circle, then the screen goes black and nothing happens.  The only out is to hit the Home button and start over.   Other times it works fine.

Also, there is no consistency of operation.  Sometimes when I turn the TV on, it goes to the Roku home screen.  Other times it goes to the last channel or program I was viewing.  Another problem I have found is that there seems to be  no return to the point where I was last viewing a program.  For a recorded program, I get the option of going to the Start or to Live, but no option to go to where I stopped watching the recording.  For a Live program, if I pause it at a certain point, it will not return to that point.  Has anyone solved these problems, or are these just bugs we have to live with?  It seems like watching YouTube TV on Roku is more an art form than a science.

OMG you just described EXACTLY what I've been experiencing since I got my Roku devices!  Perfect explanation of everything that is wrong with this. I've opened a ticket with Roku and I'm into week 2 with them getting back to me every 2-3 days, with stuff like "check your modem speed" and "reinstall the YouTube TV app". Nothing works. This is clearly a bug with Roku and YouTube TV, because I never have an issue on my Mac when I turn on YouTubeTV -- it is very fast.

I can't tell you how frustrating it is to try to switch to the World Series games in the 9th inning, and having to hit Home 3-4 times because it doesn't load. And then the game is over.

ROKU LISTEN TO US!!!!!!  YOU HAVE TO FIX THIS!!!!!!

I had a similar issue with YouTube TV on the Roku Ultra.  When I would try to skip forward 2 or 3 skips at a time (skipping forward during recorded football games), the YouTube TV app would take about 10-13 secs to finally start playing again, negating the time saved by skipping forward, while my Samsung TV YouTube TV app had no such problem.  Deleting the app/Restart the Roku/re-Install the app fixed the problem.

Roku support took a few weeks to get back to me, then told me it was the app creator's fault, ie YouTube.  They suggested I get in touch with them, but getting anyone at Google to respond is impossible....
