YouTube TV on Roku 3 very buggy

We're wanting to switch from DirecTV to YouTube TV on our Roku devices, but have been having problems with its operation. It seems that every action requires an extra button press. When we select the YouTube TV app, the screen goes blank until we press another button. When we select a program from our library to play, the screen goes blank (with a buffering symbol), and we start to hear audio, but we don't get picture until we press another button. When we use the transport controls to pause or locate to a different part of the program, the transport controls stay onscreen until we press another button. (* seems to be the safest in these situations.)

It's not a bandwidth issue; when we use YouTube TV controlled from an iPad streaming on a Chromecast, it's fine. When we select Roku as our player in the web interface, we have the same blank video screen problem.

Is there a known fix?

Try reinstalling the app. Do it this way, all these steps, in this order:

  1. Remove the app

  2. Reboot the Roku

  3. Reinstall the app

There's no guarantee that will work, but if there's an issue with the installation of the app, or data in the app being corrupt and causing issues, this should resolve that.

Uninstall/reinstall/reboot seems to have helped.

That's unexpected. The reboot as step 3 is meaningless, meaning you could have left it out and achieved the same results.

For further information, a full reinstallation is Uninstall/reboot/reinstall, in that order. That's not to say what you did is wrong (it worked, after all), but what you did is not a full reinstallation. However, in your case, if it was enough to resolve the problem, and that's good. Just be aware that the reboot between the uninstall and reinstall will remove any stray data stored in memory. A reboot at any other time doesn't do that.

A reinstall without a preceding reboot could retain any issues that are stored on the device. Just for info going forward.

Re: YouTube TV on Roku 3 very buggy

We too have been having issues with YouTube TV on Roku Premier. This usually happens when trying to watch LIVE TV. Click on a problem and press PLAY (center button), you get a swirling circle (like it is trying to download programming), then the screen goes black. The only way out is to press HOME to go back to the Roku home screen.

We are in day 2 of our 5-day YouTube TV trial, so we may opt-out of YouTube TV just based on this alone. A shame.
