Why did Roku change the way screen saver works?

Jump to solution

Recently (within the last month) the Roku screen-saver takes the user to some random channel when the play button is pushed after the pause button was previously pushed.  For example, if you pause a program being watched on YouTubeTV and you wait until the Roku screen-saver starts, pressing the play button will not restart the YouTubeTV program but instead it starts to add some random channel to the home screen. This behavior only started about August 1st.

What would be wrong about using the OK button???

You seem to be directly contradicting me.

I assume you know something.

I'm pretty sure (but haven't tried in a while) if you press the OK button on one of those stupid screensavers that advertise other channels it will install the advertised channel, so it's a good idea to avoid using the OK button when dismissing any screensaver just to prevent developing the habit.  I stopped using any of those screensavers when I discovered they could add channels.

Just reading this thread it sounds like there's some kind of bug where the screensaver isn't displaying anything, but it's still installing channels?  It's hard to read between the lines.

Try pressing the OK button and then the Play button.

Avoid using OK or Play to dismiss the screensaver.  Use any other button.

Pressing the OK button instead of the play button works but it doesn't answer my original question. Why was the functionality changed? Pressing the play button used to work just fine. If you're going to change the functionality, notify the user community!

YES! You nailed it. If you attempt to dismiss the screen saver using the OK button an advertised channel is added to your feed. Sorry you had to read between the lines.

This was not the behavior until the beginning of the month when Roku changed the process.

That would be written in the code/script of the "screensaver" its not Roku

its the Screensaver and its author(s).

Moral of the Story is not to download screensavers that aren't Roku's.

You actually should report it to Roku.

It is Malware. Especially if you paid for the Screensaver.

That's very interesting because it is not a downloaded screen-saver but the default screen-saver provided by Roku.

Yeah, this is just wrong.  I've only seen Roku screensavers that add channels.  It's probably prohibited for anyone else to even attempt such a thing.
