What does "Rent or buy because you watched..." mean?

Newbie here. After I've watched an episode of something It gets marked "rent or buy because you watched..." Does this mean I've bought something from Roku or some other entity?

Also, it seems that something will say "Episode 1 includes with your subscription to XXXX", but then I am able to watch many other episodes & seasons without being presented with a bill. What am I missing?
