Removing paid for channels

Jump to solution

I’m a little ticked off at Roku bc when I came home I had apps removed from my device without warning or permission when I pay for a subscription to that specific channel.

Ex: Derbynation.tv is no longer being accepted by Roku and was removed without my knowledge. I pay for this app and subscription to this channel. WTH Roku?!?!

@Kaleenab

Roku gave public, not just to developers but to everybody, notice in October 2021 that non-certified apps would be removed during the revamp of the app system. If Derby TV was providing a non-certified app, they had 120 days to review and update the code, and then submit it for certification. If they chose to not do that, then I would suggest you ask them why.

Bring porn back and allow adult content

Jump to solution

HiI see that Roku has buckled to Christian dominionist fascists and removed porn from your platform. You are working with organizations that were formally called the Moral Majority and Focus on the Family. It is shameful you talk about free speech in the press while censoring the content adults can watch.

I know most people won't say anything because they are embarrassed to watch porn. I'm 37 and single. I enjoy porn and using roku was a convient platform.

You have either been taken in by the Moral Majority rebranding and lying to you, or you're gleefully working with fascists to shame sex workers and consumers of porn.

Also you've stopped allowing adults, with verified by google adult accounts to watch YouTube without clicking "continue watching " every time a song has a cuss word in it rendering playlist with rap in it unusable. Once again the rebranded Moral Majority might be behind it or you simply don't believe adults should be able to enjoy content of their choosing. Maybe you're just a racist company. I don't know.

Thanks for the hardware shame you're a scumbag business .

Screen mirror is not a solution that's garbage.  Allow adults to use their devices as they see fit.

Please read the numerous threads on this. Roku did not block porn. They tightened up their policy for beta testing. Most 'adult' channels, and many piracy channels, abused the private channels option to offer services, often for a fee. Private channels were originally designed only for beta testing. Roku replaced it with a more controlled program that limits the number of users and time a channel can be in 'beta'.

Upset over "killing" of channels...

Jump to solution

A few months ago messages got sent out by several channels I used quite frequently the Roku had made decisions that would make their apps no longer work and that they were working on a
"workaround" to help alleviate the issue from their end. And then about a month ago My Roku device went from having about 700+ apps/channels to about 500+ overnight. This included about 25-30 that i used on a very regular basis. Too say I'm upset over this is an understatement.

Since this happened I decided to go through the other channels I had and start weeding out ones that don't work any longer. In about a week I deleted 36 that no longer work.

My issue is why did they kill many channels that weren't experiencing any problems what so ever and left so much **bleep** just clogging up my Roku. I don't plan on upgrading my Roku ever again in the future and will probably go to either a Chromecast or an Amazon Fire. I really liked Roku as i felt it seemed "open source". Guess I was wrong!!!

I wanted to send Roku a complaint/comment about this, but they really seem to isolate themselves from interacting with their customers.

Any one else have thoughts on this?

There are numerous threads. The short story is that many channels abused the private channel feature, which was meant for short-term beta testing. It was being used for subscriptions and to carry pirated material and porn for years.

It was replaced with a proper beta testing system. The tests are limited to typically 90 days, and there is a limit to the number of people who can participate.

Re: Upset over "killing" of channels...

As @andyross mentioned, private channel support was removed due to flagrant abuse of its functionality and disregard for legality of use. They were designed for beta testing of new channels, but far too many were using them to get around meeting Roku's standards for use. Beta testing is still available, but the channels now have a limited lifespan and restricts the number of people that can use it.

It's unfortunate that a small number of reasonable channels were removed because of this, but Roku had to make the determination for liability reasons, which is within their rights as the platform provider.

I'm not casting any aspersions about the channels you had installed, but if that many were removed from use, I would question the providers you were using. Chances are good the material they were providing was being done without proper permission.
