It wasn't an uncertified channel.

re: Roku removing un-certified channels / adult content - end of my use of Roku

Jump to solution

I appreciate the discussion and to a certain extent I get it.  The bottom line however is the same.  The channels I wanted to watch on Roku are gone.  I wish Roku would have taken some other course such as grandfathering in long standing private channels that are being actively maintained.
Regardless of what they were trying to accomplish one thing happened.

Every one of my high end Roku devices was wiped, removed, and trashed.
I have replaced all of them with the highest end competitors device.

So - Bye Roku.

A high end competitor's device would seem to mean Apple TV, Fire TV, Nvidia Shield, or Chromecast (not really high end, but okay). Am I forgetting one? And which one of those has porn in its app store?

Now if you got one of those pirate TV Android devices, sure, you can load anything on that. But those aren't high end.

Also, next time you do another knee jerk reaction, consider donating the devices you're no longer using to those that could use a hand. There are women's shelters, family services, churches, and such that would appreciate a donation of something like a high end Roku device. And if that isn't something you care bout, maybe someone else reading this would think of those less fortunate.

I bought a bunch of Roku devices, I paid my money for them. As far as I'm concerned they should have no right to tell me what I can put on them.

I'm a mid 40s person, if me and my Wife want to watch adult content on a device we paid for, Roku shouldn't have a say in that.

@FlameWardin

You're thinking the removal of non-certified apps was content-based. It wasn't. Only a small percentage of the non-certified apps were adult content. VidAngel, for instance, is not adult content. And they've been on this board raising a holy ruckus.

Roku's app certification process, which none of these apps went through, has a place to mark an app as adult.  I think it's content rating, or something like that. Anyway, of the four categories for content ratings on apps, Adult is one of them.

The problem is that these app developers didn't code the app to standards and submit them through the certification process. If somebody told you otherwise, they told you wrong.

Roku dropped private channels altogether, why

Jump to solution

Roku please allow me to exercise my freedom to speech.

We do not need a Roku to watch subscription and commercial driven content. We can always watch our subscription Content on a smart TV. Roku has thrown out any other reason to own its hardware.

Roku was built on private unrestricted  channels. Bring back private channels. As long as you have a disclaimer saying Roku is not responsible for the contents of those private channels, as it did in the past, before it went public then Roku cannot be held liable. If I am no longer able to watch the content I want to watch using the Roku I will find another device and throw out my Roku. I purchased the Roku for free TV so we could cut our cable. It’s fine that Roku wants to be a content provider. There’s no reason to block other content providers.

The more available content and capabilities of the Roku the more hardware customers you have and content customers you have. Think about it a minute a private channel gets people to buy the Roku. After buying the Roku they see all the content available and start subscribing to stuff. Roku makes its money and users are happy. You’re not Apple! Your type of hardware is not proprietary! Smart TVs do the same thing that your hardware does. Not only this people are fighting Apple now including the government about how its controlling its content.

Does Microsoft stop you from running other applications on their computers because the application makers don’t pay them a fee for the right to have that application, no they do not! Are PC manufacturers held liable for the content that people can play on their computers, No they are not.

We can now buy a mini PC that plugs into the HDMI port. I’m sure there’s a lot of private content providers that will write applications for that. Then it will replace the Roku all together.

Let private channels exist as long as they’re free. If they move to a subscription only then move it into your regular apps and charge them a fee. They should have the right to advertise to support their channel. You made your money on the Roku device itself you don’t need to scam more money out of people. Not only this you have your own content and you’re making money from the commercials. Why drive away your loyal customers?

I believe everybody reading this will agree with me!

If all else open up the Roku hardware and let somebody else write an operating system for it.

The Roku was built on private unrestricted channels. Bring back private channels. As long as you have a disclaimer saying Roku is not responsible for the contents of those private channels then Roku cannot be held liable. Make sure you add user privacy controls to your OS. Let the motion picture Association go after channels that are doing something illegal. It’s not your responsibility, it’s there’s. Do all this and advertise that you’re doing this. You will increase your user base substantially.

If I am no longer able to watch the content I want to watch using the Roku I will find another device and shelve or throw out my Roku.

Roku users make sure your voice is heard. If Roku won’t listen deactivate your accounts and throw your device on the shelf till they do listen. Don’t sell your device as that will reward Roku for blocking content against our will.

You can always watch your subscription Contet on a smart TV as Roku has thrown out any other reason to own it..

There are quite a few plug-in PC dongle’s that you can add to your TV that can do the same thing, including 4K video, and more than a Roku can do. An added bonus is having an unrestricted working web browser on your TV. So you’ll be able to watch web content freely. Also with the new standards that are going to force you to throw out all your TVs again, they may even add a tuner to the PC dongle.

PORNHUB AND ADD CHANNEL REMOVAL

Jump to solution

Why has ROKU taken it upon themselves to decide what kind of channels that we, as adults, watch on our devices as long as it is being legally provided by the Private Channel? I paid for my devices and own them and do NOT appreciate ROKU blocking and/or removing these types of channels. I totally support the blocking of ILLEGAL CHANNELS that are providing pirated content; however, it is none of ROKU's business if I use MY DEVICE that I paid for to view content that is provided legally to me. There was nowhere on the ROKU BOX that stated that they (ROKU) would be proactive in deciding what type of channels that you (The Owner) add to the device for your viewing. Again, I agree with blocking illegal channels. ROKU needs to reverse this and put the link/option back on the device to add these types of channels.

Re: PORNHUB AND ADD CHANNEL REMOVAL

Effective Feb 23, 2022 Roku has discontinued support for ALL uncertified (often called "private") channels. This has nothing to do with the content of the discontinued channels (despite what some of their developers may tell you). It is a removal of ALL channels not certified by Roku.

The entire non-certified channel system is being replaced by a new system using a new Independent Development Kit (IDK).

From Roku announcement for developers from October 2021:
"Sunsetting non-certified channels
With the release of the IDK and beta channels, Roku will remove non-certified channels from the platform by March 2022. The Roku IDK and beta channel feature will facilitate broader innovation, improve beta testing, and offer a better development experience and a more standardized development process across streaming platforms."

I own my ROKU, so what right does ROKU have to remove installed apps

Jump to solution

I own a HD Roku and recently bought a ROKU TV because I was able to install an adult content app on it.  Then a month after purchasing ROKU announces it is removing users ability to use these apps.  That is bait and switch and we won't stand for it.  I will never again purchase ANY ROKU equipment and I will be ensuring I ruin their ratings on every tool trashing their quality, reliability, etc. until they undo this decision.  It's OUR product, we can decide HOW to use it!
