Does the Roku media player need a wifi connection to play media off a usb stick?

No, it does not. But your media must use supported codecs and be in a supported container. Roku players have limited support for codecs or containers. I would need to know what model Roku you have to know for certain what it supports. 

Of course, for all current models of Roku players only the Ultra has a USB port.

No, it does not. But your media must use supported codecs and be in a supported container. Roku players have limited support for codecs or containers. I would need to know what model Roku you have to know for certain what it supports. 

Of course, for all current models of Roku players only the Ultra has a USB port.
