Roku always starts up offering Apple TV subscription

Jump to solution

For several months when I start up my Roku Express+ the initial screen is to add Apple TV to my channels. This is annoying. I always exit Roku on the home screen with my channels visible. I have tried rebooting Roku. This annoyance will not go away. How can I get rid of this?

Thank you in advance for your help.

This same thing started happening to me about 6 months ago. It IS extremely annoying! But the solution above did explain the problem to me. I use a Logitech Harmony remote to control all my devices. I created an "activity" (set of macros) that control all the devices at startup and shut them down when I press the "off" button. The "Watch Roku" activity tries to power on and power off the Roku at startup and shutdown. I don't know what it does to do this because there is no power button. SO I found that in the Harmony setup I need to go back into the device settings for my Roku and change the power settings and then tell it my original remote has no power on or off button. Then I synced my remote to update the settings and it fixed this. Apparently Roku is really pushing the Apple TV App. so that is the add that always comes up from the screen saver when my remote tried to power the Roku on or off. If are using some sort of other remote like I am then this is probably the issue for you too.

What do you mean by "start up"?  If you let a screen saver come up, and that screen saver has ads, and you press a button like play or OK, then it usually goes to whatever is being advertised.

If that's the issue, using a different button to get out of the screensaver - like Home, or using one of the screen savers with no ads would be a solution.  (I use one of the clock screen savers which has no ads.)

Thank you for your response but I don't think that is correct in my situation. In the past years, I would exit the Roku app I was using (e.g. Netflix), returning to the Roku "home" screen (menu bar on left side, my apps in middle, Roku promotion on right), shut down my TV. The next time I used Roku, the home screen would be displayed. For the past several months when I turn my TV on, Roku starts with the Add Channel screen for Apple TV (see photo below). I don't want that. I want Roku to start on the "home" screen (see photo below) as it used to. Is it possible I am the only one having this issue? That would be very weird.

The only way that screen would be visible is if you pressed a button while the screensaver is going, as mentioned. Unless you're powering your Roku with the TV's USB port (not a good way to do it, and sometimes they stay powered up anyway) the Roku is always "on" and the screensaver has started, even if you can't see it. If you hit OK or Play, and there's an ad on the SS, you activate whatever that ad is for, such as Apple TV.

Thank you @atc98092 and @johnvdo1 for your input that led to solving this issue. I too have a Logitech Harmony remote so the nicely detailed solution provided by @johnvdo1 fit my exact situation. I do not understand why Roku kept pushing Apple TV for so long. It turned out that before @johnvdo1 posted his solution I had been given a free 1-year subscription to Apple TV, which solved this issue for me. I did update my Harmony remote incase Roku starts pushing some other product.

Again thanks to both of you.
