Restart Apps (Netflix, Plex)

Jump to solution

There seems to be an issue Roku programers and developers have overlooked. The expedited start of all apps on my Roku. My Roku Premiere + is connected to my TV HDMI input. The Roku has AC power is always on and is not utilizing a USB port on the TV.  My Roku is connected via HDMI on my tv  and among the few apps that I have the home screen has Netflix and Plex, the two apps I most often use. I use the remote to select the Netflix app. When I select the app, the recognizable Netflix logo appears and it takes nearly 45 seconds to load my Netflix home page.  The same issue happens upon attempting to use the Plex media server app. I select the app and the Plex app takes 45 seconds to reach the Plex home menu.(I have one gigabyte of broadband) (the Roku is connected directly to my router), NOT a network issue. Now, to put this in perspective, if I attempt to use these same apps on my Iphone, these apps open nearly immediately. And goodness, if I want to switch between apps the same delay occurs every time.

When the developers and programmer's work to improve the Roku device add some memory to the unit. It would be nice to keep all my recent apps open in the background so I can go back to it quickly. It would also be nice to see the home menu of any of my apps I select to open immediately. Just like any other computer I use. Smiley Happy  Thank you for listening.

You have a valid point, but the audience for your comments is the developers of those channels. That developer is not Roku. Netflix and Plex are responsible for their own channels for Roku devices.

That said, I've never seen that sort of load times on any of my Roku devices. I don't think I've ever seen more than 10 seconds to load any channel on a Roku. I'm not counting my ancient 2 XS, which can barely run itself, let alone any channel.

I don't have a Premiere+, so I can't make a direct comparison with your results. I'm sitting in front of my Ultra 4800 at the moment, so that's the one I will test. Of course, this is the newest and most powerful Roku player yet built.

Opening Netflix to reach the user selection window took at most 3 seconds. I almost couldn't catch it in time, so I had to do it a second time. Plex took a full 10 seconds, but Plex is a slow loader on any device I have, including the web browser on the Plex server itself.

I can't say why it's taking so long on your device(s), but it doesn't match my experience here. While I have a Gigabit Ethernet network in my home, my Internet connection is "only" 108 Mbps. Of course, Plex shouldn't be using the Internet to load, since the server is on the same internal network. But I suppose it might have some authentication that is performed when it first loads. And that might go to the Plex servers, and might explain why it is slower than most channels to load.

Hi Dan, thanks for the reply. I have been searching for an answer to this delima via the web without any success. You pointed out something that had not occurred to me. That Plex is attempting to authenticate outside my network. After a few adjustments on the platformI was able to reduce the amount of time the application starts on the Roku device I am using, it also cured a few other Plex anomalies I had been experiencing. Again, thanks for the reply!
