Need help with media player

I just recently got a roku ultra and am trying out the Media Player with a USB stick.
I have a .AVI file that was taken with a digital camera some time ago.  I think maybe I need to convert to a different format for it to work with the  Media Player.  Can anyone tell me how I can do that ?

Re: Need help with media player

According to the Roku Ultra specs (https://handbrake.fr/). There are Presets for different Roku devices, plus other devices. Under Presets > Legacy, the Apple TV settings will work for Roku, too.

There are other utilities you can find by searching online. If the utility you choose doesn't have a Roku preset, try and Apple TV preset (now you know why I mentioned it earlier).

I got handbrake.  Had not idea what I was doing but was able to muddle thru it and get it converted and it worked on my ROKU.  The presets did not seem to list my model, I have the new roku ultra, but I just chose on of the roku ones  and gave it a try.
Thanks for your help

Re: Need help with media player

As Basil noted, Roku has very limited codec support, as well as the container the video is in. If you stick with H.264/MP4 video and container, with AAC audio, it should always work. In my experience Roku still has some issues with some H.265 content, but I haven't tested it extensively. Also, I don't use the USB port, but instead stream from my DLNA server on my home network. I let the server transcode files that normally won't play, so I don't have to fiddle with Handbrake. It's a great product, but offers so much control it's easy to get lost in the settings.
