Amazon has their own captions switch within the playing video. You have to enable it during playback. Press the down button, then the right button twice to select the CC icon. Press OK and you'll see your captions status in the lower right corner of the screen. Pressing OK toggles captions on and off, and it appears to retain the setting after exiting Prime and returning.
I just got a Roku and see captions on HULU but none on Prime. What is up with that?

i got it, thank you for the explanation.
Okay, found the trouble. Wrong resolution hid the "cc" icon. Thanks.
Installed Roku Express+ on a Samsung TV. Closed captions seem to work on every channel except Prime Video. Older Roku Streaming Stick on a Visio Tv works just fine.

I've been looking everywhere for this fix. Thank you for simply providing the correct answer.
Doesn't work for me.
First I made sure the resolution for my TV was set correctly, which it wasn't. Then when I tried, during playback of a program, this down arrow, several right arrows, to the CC in the far right corner...then it worked. Thank you!
I have enabled the subtitles; I know how to do this because I've done it successfully for years with my other Roku devices. I'm still not getting "subtitles" on Prime. I get them without a problem on Netflix. If I can't get this to work, I'm going to have to send the device back to Amazon, assuming that there is a problem with it.
