I have a Roku device and I'm in an unsupported country. Many apps aren't available on the Roku here, even when the services are available locally and equivalent apps on other devices are available. For instance, the Netflix and Prime Video services are available in practically all countries and it's only the content that is regionally restricted. These apps are available on many, many devices in this country (locally supported and otherwise) - but not Roku.
Previously when I have asked here if some apps could be opened up globally, the response I have received is it's up to these services whether they make their apps available. However all indications are that the services will not do this on Roku if the device isn't locally supported. So the biggest hurdle continues to be Roku's limited international support, and referring people back to the services is just passing the buck.
Roku could actually ask the services on their platform to make their apps available worldwide. I'm sure owners in unsupported countries would be fine with a lack of official support as long as the apps were available.
Channel availability/access on Roku devices will vary from region to region. A Roku device will work in any location, however, channels may not be available on your device in that location, based on each channel provider's discretion.
