Having trouble with the HDHomerun App on my newest Roku Ultra 2020. 4670R
Most of the stations on the tuner work but a couple of the SD stations come in squeezed looking like an iPhone screen. Silicondust is blaming the Roku MPEG 2 and that there is a bug in the decoder. HDhomerun box only sends the MPEG 2 signal and they claim they can't do anything.
The same station works fine on the old Ultra 2019 4660R. Not sure what is different.
The latest issue I have had is the recorded DVR content comes in blocky and lossy on ALL of my Roku devices now. Wired or Wireless devices with my wired HDHomerun Scribe. Odd that this happens now but they come in fine using the HDhomerun App on Windows PC wired and my Android tablet wireless.
Wish I could keep track of the issues but it is tough when they each blame the other.
Maybe someone has heard of the MPEG 2 decoder bug?
Can't say that I've heard anything about an MPEG2 decoding bug. I have an occasional aspect ratio issue with some of my DVD rips of TV shows (Frasier comes to mind, but not all episodes), but that's on my Shield. I can play the same video with my 4800 using RMP without a problem.
It's possible the TV station is broadcasting with an inaccurate flag enabled, although I have zero knowledge about what the ATSC broadcast protocol can do. But the 4800 does have a slightly different processor, and a few quirks have popped up with it. Most of the issues have been with Dolby Vision, but no telling if there's other things still being worked out.
But I did try playing some 4:3 DVD rips, and they display fine. Must be something specific with the OTA recordings in a TS container.
OK, I just tried some MPEG2 recorded OTA TV using both Plex and RMP. This was using the Ultra 4800. In both cases some recent recorded TV that had a 4:3 aspect ratio is being squeezed from the sides. I played something recorded in 16:9 720p and the aspect ratio was accurate. I'll have to try the same titles on my older Ultras or a Roku TV to see if the same thing happens. If it's consistent across all devices, then the MPEG2 decoder must not be working correctly.
I've seen this reported before - make sure you report it to Roku directly:
chat or email: https://support.roku.com/contactus/contact-options (choose setup/ultra/other/need more help)
Also, just FYI, the 4670 is the 2019 Ultra, and the 4660 is the 2017 Ultra - make sure you verify your actual models at Settings/System/About
I started a ticket. So did another community member here. I don't think it is getting anywhere.
