Re: HBO Max App is available everywhere else today, why not on Roku?

Jump to solution

I'm happy with my Roku device.

I own 2 players.

I like the remote.

Easy with big buttons.

Easy user interface.

I can use the same player on different televisions and get the same experience.

I hope the HBO Max issues gets resolved.

Well, another day, another dollar, but still no HBO Max. What surprises me is that everything is hush hush by both Warner(AT&T) and Roku. Not a peep from either that I know of. 12 more days, and I go shopping. Take that Roku! I'm sure you are mourning your loss of my presence.

Peacock isn't available either. I gave up and use my Chromecast to watch both apps. I will say that Peacock is not good. They do have a lot of shows but it stops working all the time.

At this point, 3 months after debuting, HBO Max is still not available on Roku. I don't give a rat's' ass who did what, and who deserves whatever. It is a bad look for both parties especially when nobody is forthcoming about this kerfuffle. The only people who are suffering, if you can call it that, are the dopes like me who have Rokus attached to all of their TVs, and can't watch HBO Max. Neither side appears willing to compromise. Don't think the huge conglomerate that is DirecTv/AT&T/Warner Brothers/HBO will be much affected by this, but Roku will lose users, and future profits.

Does anybody read these posts? Are they doing any good? Does anybody have any knowledge of why this process is taking so long? Why have there been no pubic postings from Roku or AT&T?

I think it depends a LOT, on how many subscriptions got canceled, as a result (this is what I did).  Most titles are available elsewhere, and so far in the past month we haven't rented enough stuff, to equal my 15/month for HBO.

When I had ATT, and got it free, then there would've been no "canceling" the feature, not sure how many of the "subscriptions" are tied to mobile-service though.

If they see say a 20% drop, in overall subs, it'll be a big deal, for ATT/HBO (and Roku, but likely to a lesser degree).

The way I see it, HBO (regular or Max) needs Roku, to some degree, but Roku likely won't see much of a change in their sales/use, overall.  Time will tell...

I disagree that it won't hurt Roku much. Most people I think want the content of HBO Max so they'll probably do like I did last week:

I cancelled my HBO sub through Roku, signed up with HBO via their site and got a smart non-Roku tv.

Been a Roku fan for 7 years now, even got them as gifts for others. No more. I'm done being their pawn. I don't need them to get HBO Max.

Actually, WarnerMedia has been quite informative through interviews given by their CEO. Here are a few different takes on an interview he gave Bloomberg. The actual Bloomberg article is behind a paywall, but I'll provide that link as well:

https://thestreamable.com/news/warnermedia-ceo-wants-roku-and-amazon-to-treat-hbo-max-like-netflix-o...  (I have looked at HBO Max. It's not worth as much as Netflix or Hulu. Maybe someday)

https://www.mediaplaynews.com/warnermedia-ceo-not-concerned-with-hbo-max-sluggish-start/

I would think he would be. I mean, he has a few million subscribers that are only subscribed because they were provided HBO Max free with their ATT Uverse, Internet, or cell plan. What would the start look like without those? Without those involuntary subscribers 'glacial' might be a better description of the HBO Max start.

Kilar says, “People forget, but it took Netflix four years to get to its first 1 million subscribers. It took Hulu about a year. HBO Max got there in a matter of weeks,” Kilar told Bloomberg."

They got there in a matter of weeks by providing the service free for ATT customers and some other cable providers, whether they asked for it, didn't want it, or didn't even know about it. Mr. Kilar is drinking his own kool-aid.

Well yes, they did get to their million easily, sure, but knocking HBO like it's some kind of small niche programming outlet is forgetting about Sex and the City, The Sopranos, Band of Brothers, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Oz, Game of Thrones, etc etc.

Content is going to win the battle every time. Roku and Amazon don't play at HBO's level, offering wise. Until they do, they will be mostly considered hardware and not content. If they want to be jerky gatekeepers like the cable companies are, that's fine.

But if I'm paying 15 bucks for HBO but not getting the Max part for the same price like everyone else, I'll go somewhere I can. And I did.
