The instructions say to Plug the base station into power and your router. I've plugged it into power but does it really need to physically plug into my router?

When these first came out, you had to plug the base station into the router via a wired connection (ethernet) during setup but then could unplug it from the router and use a wifi connection instead.

I believe you can now just set it up using wifi (and avoid the ethernet connection requirement).  There is an option under the settings in the Smart Home app for the Base Station.  Try selecting the gear icon after you select the Base Station, then look under Device Info/Change Connection and change it to wifi.
