Power for outdoor wired camera over cat-6 cable

Jump to solution

The builder of my new house ran cat-6 Ethernet cables from a central site in the basement to various locations on the outside for potential use as a security system.  There are no AC outlets at these locations.

I would like to place my Roku power modules (USB-C male connectors) in the basement and deliver the power over the cat-6 cables (male RJ-45 Ethernet connectors) to my cameras (USB-C female connectors).  Can I accomplish this using off-the-shelf adapters at each end, or do I need to cut and splice the wires (ugh)?  Has anyone done this successfully?

Are there any specs available detailing the exact pinouts of the USB-C connectors and the exact power requirements of the outdoor camera?

Hi there, @CW56.

Welcome to the Roku Community!

Thanks for reaching out—we’re happy to help!

The power requirement for the outdoor camera is 5v 1amp, but we don’t have the exact pinouts available. If you're thinking about using off-the-shelf adapters, we’d recommend working with a professional technician to stay safe.

Hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions or need more assistance.
