I have never known there to be any charge after purchase to add a new Roku device to your Roku account.

Roku doesn't ever charge anything after purchase, except if you sign up for a 3rd party subscription through Roku, as far as I've found.

That being said, there has been more than 1 report on these forums of something similar.

I'm wondering if some Roku devices have been hacked/modified prior to purchase to display this error message, hoping that some people will call and submit this fraudulent payment, as apparently happened in your case.

I hope Roku takes notice of these reports and figures out what's going on, and somehow addresses it, or their reputation could become quite damaged.

Sadly this happened to my mother today and she ended up paying. I guess they completed the activation for her somehow. I told her to lock her card. What else does she need to do?

Sounds Hokey to me. Did you buy the new one at best Buy?

NEVER use a DEBIT card. Use a CREDIT card where you have 100% control and laws protecting you. Plus they don't IMMEDIATELY get your money.

You can call your bank and dispute the charge. Look at what name company is shown for the charge. As noted many times, Roku does NOT charge to add devices.

Do you know EXACTLY what number was shown and that you called? Hopefully you used a phone that keeps a record of calls.

I have been trying for days to find a number or a way to contact Roku support. I have emailed several people and I’ve gotten a reply email saying they would contact me with no luck. Can I please get a telephone number to contact Roku agent? Because someone asked for my password and charged me money to continue my Roku account

You did not speak to actual Roku support. Roku doesn't EVER charge for activation or support. No one here can assist you with this. They were scammers and not actual Roku employees. Hopefully you can challenge the charge on your card. I would also cancel the card used and get a replacement with a new number. No telling what you'll be charged for.

Tech support says you have to pay $69.95 to update your roku device.

My brand new roku device will not connect to the internet, neither will my old one. My FireStick connects. Roku tech support said I would have to pay for a new update to the tune of $69.95!
