Possible subscription scam

I received a text saying my roku subscription will run in three days.

The free subscription was for three years (starting 3 years ago when I received this TV)

Now that the free three years have run, I'm being asked to renew for 3 or 5 years.  The 3 year subscription is $226.  The 5 year subscription is $300.

I am unwilling to give them a credit or debit card.  I went to Roku.com to see if I could do this online.  If it's there, I'm not finding it.

Is this a scam?

Re: Possible subscription scam

There is no such thing as a Roku subscription and definitely not a 3-year free subscription for anything that I am aware.  Using the Roku device is free and using the Roku Channel is free.  Other than paying of the device itself and any individual subscriptions or streaming services, such as Hulu, AppleTv, or others that require a subscription to view.

Most definitely sounds like a scam.   How were you contacted?  If an email was sent to you, I would forward it to Roku on the support page, so that they are aware.

Re: Possible subscription scam

I was originally texted but then was sent an email.  The email was shawn.miller@rokubilling.

Thank you for your reply.

Re: Possible subscription scam

Sounds like your information has been compromised in some way or another, like most of the population these days.  No one from Roku will contact you like that and try to charge you for something after 3 years.  Even those services that charge for subscriptions that have free trials only have a few months at most and most of those are even less than that.  Once you buy a Roku device, you can stream the free channels, well, for free, with whoever your internet provider is.  There are tons of scams out there pretending to be Roku, Disney, Spectrum and others.  Block and ignore them and find the legitimate sites to get the information from.

@anne1118

Go to your online dashboard at https://www.roku.com/ and login to your account. (use the little user icon on far, upper right of screen).  Change your password to the account.

Previous scams like this sometimes resulted in the Roku TV or device being "locked" through the use of a Guest Mode setting since the scammer were provided the account details by the unsuspecting user.

Roku accounts are free to create and unless you sign up for optional premium subscriptions, there is no charge to use Roku.

Re: Possible subscription scam

I changed my password.  I looked around to see if there was a way to close a guest user option. Couldn't find anything.  Is this necessary?  If so, suggestions?

Thanks

@anne1118

No, you are good now that you changed your password.  Just prevents any unauthorized entry into your Roku account.

If needing help in the future, just reach out here in the forums or you can read through the official documentation at https://support.roku.com/.

Best not to call any phone numbers or careful when using other sites you may find through internet searches. (especially if they want to charge for support or sell you services).
