I just looked at one of my Roku players, and I can see a subtle difference between an 0 and O. In fact, it's exactly what I see here in the two characters. The Zero is not a smooth circle, but is a bit elongated, i.e. it's a little skinny looking, taller than it is wide. The letter O appears as a smooth circle. It's obvious once you see it, but at a glance they do appear very similar.

Hi @CutthecordinAZ

Thanks for the post.

For clarification, are you inquiring what's the difference between alpha and numeric characters? If so, alpha is the alphabetic characters, A-Z, then numeric are numbers from 0-9. Alphanumeric combines both characters in a serial number.

You can always check your device information in Settings > System > About

I hope this helps!

All the best,
Kariza

Hi Kariza,

Thank you for your rely.

What I would like to know is:

How can you tell when an “oval” in a string of characters represents an “alpha”  (letter – as in “O” for OPEN) and when an “oval” represents a “numerical” value (the number zero) ?

If there was a “slash”  through the “oval” it would represent a “numerical” value (zero) – without a slash they look identical.

This, as you can see below, is a problem for consumers and Apple has addressed it – why can’t ROKU ??

Reference 1:
“There is no standard format for serial numbers. Some serial numbers only include numbers,
while others are alphanumeric, meaning they include both letters and numbers. It is common
for serial numbers to exclude the letter "O" to avoid confusion with the number.”

Reference 2:
“Jan 22, 2021 — Apple doesn't use the letters O or Ø in their serial numbers.”

Best,
DB

You can always copy and paste the serial number from the linked devices shown at https://my.roku.com (assuming it's already linked).
