Re: HBO Max added with random account!??

I had this same issue as well.  I've had my roku tv for months. I just opened up HBO Max and instead of loading my profiles it opened someone else's account? I was able to see the email address and it's someone I've never met.  There is literally no way someone could have come in and logged themselves in to HBO max on my roku.  All of my other apps are still logged in as me normally.

This is a HUGE issue.  If my account gets loaded on to someone else's account it exposes my PII (email address) and potentially other sensitive information.

Re: HBO Max added with random account!??

Hulu told me that Roku has had a data breach. Someone was using my account for a Hulu subscription using my saved credit card on the Roku account. Remove your credit card and sign up for the streaming services directly from the platform you want to use. Don't let Roku pay for your accounts. Your personal info isn't secure.

There has been no report (to date) of a Roku security breach. There has been report of Hulu security breaches. https://www.cordcuttersnews.com/was-your-hulu-account-hacked-here-is-how-to-find-out/

So, I'd take what that Hulu person said with a grain of salt until such time as it's confirmed.

Now, to be clear, I have concerns about paying for subscriptions through Roku, but they aren't security concerns.

Re: HBO Max added with random account!??

@DBDukes  Given that Hulu notified me that the breach was a Roku breach, and that Roku allowed the charges on my account to happen, unchecked, I believe Roku. And that especially goes for the fact that my post about this had the title changed to "unrecognized charges" which it was not. It was a clear cut data breach. Hulu didn't have my credit card information. Roku did.  And the fact it took them TWO HOURS to figure out how to remove my personal information tells me that they have serious security issues. Without the heads up from Hulu, I wouldn't have known anything. Roku just hasn't disclosed the data breach.

Is this the post that isn't named "Data breach"?

Because ... ?

I'm not saying there hasn't been one. I'm saying that until there are confirmed reports, I'm reluctant to state anything as fact that may not be. But, that's my old news reporter background kicking in. I await confirmation.

Ironically, I am a news reporter as well. 25 years in Washington - in political journalism. So I get that. But I also did a fair amount of tech reporting. So when something smells like a skunk...it's usually a skunk. And Roku smells like a rotting, dead skunk.

Re: HBO Max added with random account!??

@Mobilekathy *coincidentally. I'm older-school than you. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

I concur that something's going on with charges credited to Roku that aren't showing up on Roku's subscription and purchase pages, but having a background in credit card processing also (my news career ended in the '80s) I'm aware that the description on any credit card transaction can say things it isn't. That's how porn and affairs Websites hide their purpose from the porn/cheater's spouse, listing "IT support" or something other than "Ashley Madison" or "PornHub" or whatever. A charge saying Roku doesn't mean it's from Roku, even if it's a card that was tied to a Roku account. Odds are the card was used elsewhere at some time, and the breach could be anywhere, from another online store, to a local restaurant, to anything else.

Again, I'm not saying that Roku didn't have a breach. I'm saying that there are many things that could lead to what we're seeing. The only way Hulu would know of a Roku breach would be communication between Hulu and Roku. Well, unless a bank was breached and they notified Hulu and Roku both. Either way, a breach that involved communications between companies would be reported publicly quickly, as to minimize damage.

I'm watching for this carefully, and am interested to see how it works out. I'm still holding judgment, but as I do share a similar background in seeking out things, I do understand how you're leaning the way you are.

Re: HBO Max added with random account!??

This happened to us last night!  A random hbomax account loaded into out Roku.  We noticed right away because we have locked profiles for the kids and this completely disabled that.   Pretty weird and sort of scary that this can happen.   I logged out in the Roku but it wouldn’t recognize my password!   Had to change the password in HBO max then I was able to log back in.  Granted - HBOMax Roku App is sort of clunky but this is an issue that needs to be looked into.

Re: HBO Max added with random account!??

[hey everyone, can we stop debating about who had what security breach and get Roku to figure out this specific issue? Since it’s been going on for like 6 months?]

Hi Danny --

Same thing just happened to me: HBO Max told me I needed to sign in again. (FWIW, then the sign in button wouldn’t work so I checked for updates (none), restarted, went back to HBO Max, and the button worked). I got a 6-character code and was told to go to hbomax.com/tvsignin. Entered the code, chose my provider, logged in to my provider’s account, and HBO Max on Roku activated... with someone else’s profile! Details:

Device model 4210X - Roku 2
S/N 5Y25AX032462
Device ID = where? (it’s not on my System Info screen)
OS 10.0.0 build 4195-04 (no updates available)
HBO MAX Version 50.11 build 24 (no updates available)

THANKS!

EDIT tried some troubleshooting:

  1. Removed HBO Max.
  2. Restarted my Roku
  3. Added HBO Max again

Opened HBO Max; same two profiles. So I chose one of them... Interesting result: the profile doesn’t appear to be mine, BUT the “Continue watching” content IS correct for my profile. Just FYI.

Re: HBO Max added with random account!??

Hi Danny,

I’ve had Rokus since the beginning.

Since this HBO MAX issue has happened to me not once but twice, and since Roku has provided no clear answer to this obvious security problem, I’ve purchased two Apple TV 4K units and have relegated my old Rokus to the trash. (I’d give them away, but there’s no one I dislike enough to do this to.)

Never looking back. c-ya.
