Voice Remote Pro private listening no longer working

My Voice Remote Pro (only purchased a year ago) had this problem where the private listening function randomly stops working. I can still use the remote to select channels, etc but I plug in the headphones and it doesn't recognize them. I usually have to reset three remote and streaming device several times, forcing the remote to re-pair with the device but it happens again and again. Any suggestions?
