Voice remote not working unless plugged in/charging issue

I am having the same issue. Just got the voice remote pro for my Roku TV. I have paired it. It is fully charged. But won't control my TV unless it is plugged in. Works fine while plugged in. I unplugged it, it will work for a few seconds then stops controlling the TV. I plug it back in after a few seconds it will start controlling the TV. Unplug it same thing works for a few seconds then stops controlling the TV. I shouldn't have to keep it plugged in to work. Please help.

  • Hi Community users,

We're checking in to see if any of you have encountered the following issues with your Roku Voice Remote Pro:

    1. Will not charge
    2. Only powers on when plugged into an outlet
    3. Does not turn on or work
    4. Not holding a charge - This includes cases where the device loses charge within a day or two after being fully charged and unplugged.

If you've experienced any of these problems, here are some steps you can try:

    • Test with different power outlets, micro USB cables, and USB chargers.
    • Reset the remote: Press and hold the Back/pairing button and Home buttons simultaneously for about 20 seconds. For detailed instructions on how to reset the remote, you can refer to this support link: How to fix your Roku voice remote that is not working | Roku.

Note: We'll mark this post as solved for visibility and as a reference for other users.

If you continue to experience the issue, please inform us and provide any additional information that may assist our team in conducting a more detailed investigation. To improve our assistance, please include the serial number of your Roku device that is paired with your Roku Voice Remote Pro.

Thank you for being part of the Roku community and for supporting us. We appreciate your involvement and recognize the value you bring to our platform. We look forward to your continued participation.

  • I have a rechargeable voice remote that will not function unless it is plugged into the charger.  It was working fine this morning. My son turned the TV off and came back in 20 minutes later and it wouldn't connect.

I plugged it into the charger thinking it might be low, but the screen immediately showed 100% battery. It works fine when plugged in, but is a brick without an exterior power source.

I've gone through the troubleshooting steps while plugged in with no luck.  I can't go through them without being plugged in because no lights light up without being plugged in.

Any ideas without replacing a remote that is less than a year old?

      Hi, Brothertroy

Thanks for posting here in the Roku Community.

We're sorry to hear about this concern and are here to assist. As a start, have you tried using a different cable and charging it for 1-2 hours to see if you're able to use it without being plugged into a power source?

Please keep us posted so we can assist further.

      All the best,
      Kash

Three different cables give the same result after charging for 1-2 hours on one and overnight on two.

I have a Roku Pro replacement remote that will not work within being attached to the charging cable.  I tried it with two different cables for more than 4 hours or more each.  I had to throw a Roku system away because it was no longer supported, now this.  What seems to be wrong with ROKU equipment.  Might be my last time purchasing the brand, might be awhile since I have them in four rooms.  Can anyone help me?

  • I found the issue with mine that was doing this...I took the remote apart because I knew it had to be battery related. Once I got it apart and checked it the ground wire [negative/black wire] was broken lose from the battery board. I very carefully resoldered it to the board with my soldering iron and wahlahhh...fixed! Hope this helps somebody. Please don't attempt if you aren't comfortable soldering because lith batteries are pretty dangerous!

  • I'm having the same problem. I plug it in to the USB and it works but it flashes on screen 100% battery over and over again. I unplug it and it doesn't do anything. Is it just a battery issue? How can I replace it?

    Thanks, for any help.

  • I have 3 of these remotes and all three of then are doing the same thing. Won't hold a charge, turn off immediately upon unplugging, and have to stay plugged in to charge. That's almost $100 I've spent on remotes that now are basically useless and have become wired tv remotes. This helps with not losing them since they're tether to an outlet in order to be used. It's also annoying because the battery level pop-up box continuously pops up while the remote is plugged in. As soon as it's unplugged from a power source it stops. I've had these remotes going on 2 years and all 3 went down at the same time. I won't be giving any more money for new ones since it seems it's still a problem. I've done all the prompts to "fix" the problem but shocker they're all still broken.

Welcome, and thank you for posting here in the Roku Community, itsdranotdria!

Thank you for letting us know about the issues you've encountered with your Roku Voice Remote Pro. I want to help you find the best resolution for this.

Can you please try to reset all of the affected remotes by pressing and holding the Back and Home buttons simultaneously for about 20 seconds? After doing so, pair the remote again and try charging it using a different cord to see if this will make any difference.

Furthermore, to confirm, did you purchase these remotes separately, or is this the remote that comes with your Roku players?

      Your response is highly anticipated.

      Best regards,
      Carly

    Hi Blueyes67,

A warm welcome here in the Roku Community!

We appreciate you sharing your concern with us. Rest assured that we'll help you with this. May we know how many hours you have charged your Roku Voice remote pro before using it? Also, are you seeing any battery icon appearing on your screen? If so, does it prompt a full battery icon? A full or empty battery icon indicates the status of your remote's battery.

Please keep us posted so we can proceed with the necessary actions to address this issue.

    All the best,
    Kash

Yes I charged it and it said fully charged. I have even tried pairing again several times last night and as i am pairing it, it will work. Then after I have finished pairing it will work for a few seconds then stops. But as soon as I plug it back in and as long as it's plugged in it will work fine. I even went ahead and let it stay plugged in overnight and checked it again this morning before I left for work and still same thing. Unplugged it won't work. Plug it in and it works fine. Totally makes no sense.

  • I have the same problem with my voice remote pro. It's been working without issue for months and fully charged. The only way I can get it to control TV volume any more is plug the remote into the charging cable. Repairing the remote only fixes the problem for a few seconds, then it must be charging in order to control volume.

Same was happening to mine...I took it apart and the ground wire had come unsoldered from the battery pack...I resoldered it and fixed my problem...guarantee that's ur problem! Looks like they didn't do very good quality soldering on these remotes

RokuTakashi I have replied to you in a private message with the requested information. Thank you, Mark

  • Nobody else provides a real answer to this so I'll post an actual solution.

I had exactly the same issue with my pro remote.  It worked when plugged in but not otherwise.  The canned answer of re-pairing did nothing.  Nor did rebooting the remote.

So I opened it up and discovered one of the three wires to the battery was broken at the solder joint.

I have the tools to fix this so I used a soldering iron to reconnect the wire and the remote is fixed.

If you don't have those tools or skills the next best thing is to see if you can buy a replacement battery pack online.  Open it up, look for a part number on it and order one.

If your Roku Voice Remote Pro is not working unless it's plugged in, it could be due to several reasons:

    1. **Battery Issue**: The battery may not be holding a charge properly. Try replacing the batteries with new ones to see if that resolves the issue.

    2. **Charging Problem**: If the remote is not charging properly or holding a charge when unplugged, there may be an issue with the charging cable, port, or internal charging components. Make sure you're using the correct charging cable and try charging the remote using a different power source or cable.

    3. **Firmware Update**: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your Roku Voice Remote Pro. Sometimes, firmware updates can address compatibility issues or improve the performance of the remote.

    4. **Reset the Remote**: Try resetting the remote to its factory settings. This can sometimes resolve issues with unresponsive or malfunctioning remotes. You can usually find instructions for resetting the remote in the user manual or on the Roku support website.

    5. **Contact Roku Support**: If the issue persists after trying the above steps, it's possible that there may be a hardware problem with the remote. Contact Roku customer support for further assistance, especially if the remote is still under warranty. They may be able to provide troubleshooting guidance or arrange for a replacement remote if necessary.

We have tried everything with no luck. Tried to send in for repair through the three year warranty I purchased through Amazon with no luck. They refused to help me even after I paid extra for warranty after buying 5 remotes so far.

  • My voice remote pro remote suddenly doesn’t work at all unless usb charger is plugged in.

I’ve tried a few of the solutions in the forum — reset, re-pair — but remote became unresponsive unless plugged in, and the pairing and reset process doesn’t work when charging.

Model: Voice Remote Pro (RC538) — with built-in battery.

    Firmware version: rtn.4246

A warm welcome here in the Roku Community, MarcelloD!

Thank you for reporting the issues you've encountered with your physical Roku Voice Remote Pro. I'd be happy to find you the best resolution possible.

Firstly, can you please tell me what specific Roku player this remote was connected to? Perhaps you can provide me with its serial number. Also, is this the remote that comes with it? When and where did you purchase this?

I look forward to your response so that I can better assess your concern and provide an accurate resolution.

      Best regards,
      Carly

I have had this exact same issue with the remote! I followed all troubleshooting suggestions and nothing is fixing the remote. It will tell me that it is 92% battery life but then when replugged in, it will say 0% battery, then replug again and now it’s at 100%. Pairing won’t work. Unplugged Roku stick, that didn’t work. Switched outlets, that didn’t change anything.

      Thanks for the reply, Jp27!

We appreciate you for letting us know about this charging issue on your Roku remote. Can you please specify the type of Roku remote you have? Is this the remote that came with that device? If not, kindly specify if this is a Voice Remote Pro or Voice Remote Pro (2nd edition). Also, please provide the Serial number of the Roku player to which this remote is paired.

In the meantime, please consider using our Roku mobile app for temporary and backup remotes. For detailed instructions, please refer to our dedicated support article: How to use the Roku mobile app.

We look forward to hearing from you and looking closely into this issue.

      Thanks,
